Tunic is an adorably awe-inspiring indie title developed by Andrew Shouldice and published by Finji. Players take on the role of a fox adventurer as they navigate the fantastically dangerous world around them. Both the level and combat design are heavily inspired by legendary video game series like Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda.

Tunic is full of many secrets to discover, and players must navigate the world to figure out what exactly is going on. Preparation is key, so knowing what can be purchased from the various shops and merchants mean the difference between victory and defeat.

8 Lures

The enemies in Tunic can be rather tough to take down, but most of them aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed. Manipulating their understanding of what exactly is going on at any point in time can pay great dividends for strategically-minded individuals.

Lures can be purchased at shops, and they provide a decoy of sorts that will cause enemies to attack in the wrong direction, opening them up to free swings by the player. Those who aren't looking for a fight, but simply a way through, can also use lures to get past enemies without having a confrontation take place.

7 Fruit

Players looking to gather themselves with the consumption of food in Tunic will be happy to know that the game has two colored fruits that aid the player in unique ways. The Pink Fruit restores the player's health slightly and is a single-use item, meaning that multiple uses require the purchase of several Pink Fruits.

The Blue Fruit, on the other hand, restores the player's magic bar and works in the same way as its Pink counterpart. It may feel dumb spending hard-earned currency on fruit, but having some available when the going gets tough can come in clutch and save the day.

6 Bombs

Tunic seems to lean into the idea of letting its players approach combat and challenges in their own way. They offer items that can alleviate both the stress and difficulty of the game. One of these items is the various bombs purchasable in shopfronts around the map.

All three of the bomb types are single-use and come in Fire, Ice, and Explosive versions. The Fire Bomb explodes and applies burns to enemies, Explosive Bombs offer highly effective explosions, and the Ice Bombs freeze enemies in place. They all provide something unique and it's up to the player to decide when and where to use them.

5 Ivy

Ivy may not sound like the type of item that's useful to an adventurer in a fantasy world, but the plant actually bestows a solid temporary buff to the fox. It's a defensive boost, protecting the player's health and helping them overcome whatever challenge presents itself.

Those looking to get their hands on it won't have to travel too far, provided they know where the shop located inside of the windmill is. Ivy is purchasable at the various other shops in the game as well.

4 Magic Potions

Magic Potions are some of the most common items in video games, and they almost always serve the same purpose. Players use them to refill their magic bar, so they have access to whatever that magic provides.

In Tunic it's used to heal the player, so having that bar filled is a great indicator of how successful one could be in any given scenario. Shops around the world of Tunic allow the player to buy Magic Potions, so there's no excuse to not be stocked up and prepared.

3 Hot Pepper

Hot Peppers are an important part of the culinary world, but they also play a vital role in the world of Tunic. As with some of the game's other single-use items, the Hot Pepper provides a temporary boost for a limited amount of time.

It specifically grants the fox a stronger attack, which does wonders when facing tougher enemies that take more than their fair share of strikes from even the most skilled of fighters. They're most easily purchased at the shop at the center of the map, inside of a windmill.

2 Magic Potion Container

Sure, there are plenty of Magic Potions to buy at shops in order to replenish the adventurous fox's magic abilities, but the shops also have items that expand potion slots. These items are called Magic Potion Containers, and upon purchase or discovery in a chest, they give the player additional potion slots.

This in turn adds more healing opportunities that can come in clutch when danger is lurking around every corner. Players who are rather skilled at the game might see it as a challenge to play through the game without these bonuses, but for everyone else, there's no shame in having some more healing at one's side.

1 Golden Coins

Golden Coins happen to be some of the most important items in Tunic that players can either discover while exploring or purchase at shops. By tossing them into specific wells players are rewarded with card slots that allow for the equipping of buffs.

Players will need to gather a total of 15 Golden Coins if they're looking to get all of the upgrades. The first two upgrades in the tree each cost three coins, the second is four coins, and the final upgrade for card slots is five coins. This is all explained on page 20 of the beautifully crafted in-game manual Tunic provides for the player.

Tunic is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
