At last year's E3, Sony announced Trover Saves the Universe, a "comedy adventure" game from Rick and Morty Co-Creator Justin Roiland's Squanch Games. Now, this intriguingly bizarre-looking title has a new trailer as well as a release date (or two dates, to be exact).

That is, Trover Saves the Universe's release date is May 31 on PlayStation 4 and PSVR , while PC players will need to wait until June 4 for Roiland's new creation. Pre-orders are now available through the PlayStation Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, and pre-purchasers will receive a 10% discount on the game.

With respect to the new Trover Saves the Universe trailer, it was shared during Gearbox's recent PAX East 2019 panel, and, as fans of Rick and Morty are likely to expect, it is a wild ride. Filled with the indication of extremely excessive profanity, creatures with faces for eyes, and Roiland's comedic style, this trailer certainly suggests that Squanch Games' new title may turn some heads.

Watching the trailer, fans will get a sense of Trover Saves the Universe's story. Essentially, an evil bird-like entity, named Glorkon, has stolen your two puppies, and you want them back. Fortunately, you have the purple alien Trover to assist you, and, in a fourth-wall breaking setup,  you will fight your battles from a chair, using this creature as your vessel.

This hyper-self-awareness also appears to manifest in Trover Saves the Universe's gameplay. For example, when controlling Trover, a pair of hands holding a controller appears on screen — once again emphasizing the game's avatar as something being fully manipulated by the player.

As indicated in the trailer, the game will be playable as a VR experience as well as in standard formats. With its expectedly psychedelic visuals, it does seem that the title may be best enjoyed in VR.

While the Borderlands 3 trailer was undoubtedly the highlight of Gearbox's PAX panel for many, Trover Saves the Universe certainly made a statement. For fans of Rick and Morty's irreverent attitude, this may indeed be a game to watch, and interested players do not have long to wait until the title's release.

Trover Saves the Universe releases May 31, 2019, on PS4 and PSVR, and June 4th on PC.
