Frozenbyte Games, the Helsinki based developers behind the beloved Trine games, has announced a third installment coming later this year, Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power. Based on the announcement trailer above, Trine 3 will be following in its predecessor's footsteps, while adding some new features as well.

Trine and Trine 2 are side-scrolling, puzzle-based adventure games known for their gorgeous environments, as well as their three whimsical protagonists. Each of those protagonists has a unique ability and the core gameplay loop involves either switching between those characters solo or using co-op to progress.

In Trine 3, the game welcomes back the undoubtedly colorful and vibrant level design, as well as the aforementioned three - Amadeus the wizard, Pontius the knight and Zoya the thief. The official statement for the announcement from FrozenByte Games:

The Three Heroes embark on a new adventure through an enchanting fairytale world full of wonders, puzzles, dangerous foes and strange magic - coming 2015!

From the looks of it, Frozenbyte seem to have included some evolutionary changes with the third installment. Most notably is the diversity in camera angles. Where traditional Trine games seemingly stuck to the 2D view, Trine 3 shows some views from behind the characters, as well as a couple of other viewpoints. In the same vain, there also appears to be some added freedom of movement within the guided path of the levels.

Based on the announcement trailer and screenshots above, Trine 3 seems like it will deliver a diverse and attractive collection of level locations, as well as a few fantastical non-playable characters that we'd expect to see with a new Trine offering. It also looks like there will be plenty of new challenges with the puzzles baked into the level design, surely forcing gamers scratch their heads awhile before discovering the right combination of the three characters separate abilities.

Trine 3 will initially release on PC, but Frozenbyte mentions that other platforms are TBA. Trine and Trine 2 are available on PC, Mac and a variety of consoles, so it's a safe bet that we'll see Trine 3 make an appearance on those platforms as well. System specifications have yet to be revealed.

Are you looking forward to Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power? What do you hope to see in the third installment?
