Super Mario Maker 2 gives players the tools to create their very own side-scrolling Super Mario levels. Some people use these tools to create absolute platforming nightmares that push even the best Super Mario players' skills to the limit, like the Cat Trick EX2 stage created by user TiVoKen. This level is so hard, in fact, that it took Twitch streamer and well-known Nintendo speedrunner Trihex a staggering eight hours to complete it.

After eight hours of trying to beat the Cat Trick EX2 stage in Super Mario Maker 2, Trihex finally did it, and did so in just 42 seconds. This was shy of the world record of 38 seconds, but is impressive nevertheless. The stage has had nearly 19,000 attempts at the time of this writing, and out of all of those attempts, it's only had 11 clears. This gives the Cat Trick EX2 stage a miserable 0.05% clear rate, so it's no surprise it even took someone as skilled as Trihex such a long time to beat it.

For those interested in trying out the insanely hard Cat Trick EX2 stage for themselves, the Course ID is R3K-Y6L-LLF. We've included Trihex's reaction to completing the level, as well as a walkthrough of the level on YouTube uploaded by Cat Trick EX2 course creator TiVoKen.

TiVoKen's walkthrough:

As can probably be guessed by the name of the level, Cat Trick EX2 utilizes the Cat Suit power-up, forcing players to master its unique abilities if they want to succeed. This makes this ultra-tough level one that even veterans of the original Super Mario Maker will want to try out, as the Cat Suit power-up wasn't available in the first game.

Moving forward, fans can expect the Super Mario Maker 2 community to keep supporting the game with user-created levels for years to come. It's likely that quite a few of those levels will turn out to be ultra-tough, near-impossible stages like Cat Trick Ex2, but it remains to be seen if anything will top the Lucky Draw level from the first Super Mario Maker. For those that don't remember, Lucky Draw was basically a lottery, and was only beaten legitimately after a jaw-dropping 4.2 million attempts.

Super Mario Maker 2 is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
