The evolution of the multiplayer survival genre in the last decade has been explosive. It's led to a variety of new and interesting takes on basic survival, while evolving on the gameplay mechanics that made the prior entries succeed. Norsfell is a gaming company out of Montreal, Canada, that is seeking to throw it's proverbial hat into the ring with the upcoming Tribes of Midgard. In a recent interview with Game Rant, Norsfell's CEO talked about Tribes of Midgard and how the developer is trying to step away from the typical survival genre in order to build a new communal experience.

During the interview, Julian Maroda discussed the importance of creating a team-environment inside the game as well as during production, as Norsfell is always considering what its fans would like to see. Even the plans for events and future DLC are tentative, as Norsfell is purely dedicated to creating an experience that its fans actively want to live in.  In Tribes of Midgard, all the players start out at the same place, spawning in a village near-naked. From there it's up to the village of vikings to either rise themselves to the challenge, or fall to the Giants of Ragnarok.

It Takes a Tribe of 10 to Tango

10 Vikings stand around the Life Tree

When it comes to multiplayer game restrictions, the number of players in a squad usually lands somewhere around four players. However, Norsfell discusses how it wanted to get away from the traditional four person multiplayer, and evolve it, to create a larger sense of community inside Tribes of Midgard. Playing with the max amount of players allows for more exploration as well as being able to coordinate and prepare for the Giant that may already be on its way. One example Julian Maroda uses in the interview is the Ranger being able to scout ahead for the Giant while the rest of the viking cast are focusing on preparing for the attack.

"For us to go back to what I was saying about the sense of awe and the sense of scale, it was very important to have that kind of communal experience and to go with that community aspect."

Creating a world that feels large enough for 10 players isn't an easy feat, but Norsfell has had help. During the interview, Julian couldn't stress enough how much his team relies on the input he gets from fans. It's Norsfell's goal to be able to create a community around Tribes of Midgard by making a fan-inspired game, as they believe that will translate into more players and fun in the future. The CEO even goes as far to describe the inside jokes the developers have put into Midgard that only fans who have been following the development would understand.

Growing Up in Midgard

Four players fist bump after finding some treasure

All players in Tribes of Midgard will start out at roughly the same place when they enter Midgard for the first time. After being raised by the Valkyries, the players will have none of their earthly possessions and will only be clad in bits of cloth. It's up for the player to work together with their friends, or alone, to find the materials they need to craft their gear. From here, it'll be up to the player to go explore in search of better resources to craft better equipment if they have any hope of defeating the Giants making there way to the village. Players will also need to be aware of the improvements they can make to their village, which also starts out in a very basic form.

"When you start, you start pretty much naked, because you come down from Valhalla."

The upcoming action survival Tribes of Midgard seeks to re-imagine the way that players think about survival games. Instead of the player being alone in this strange new world, they will be able to rely on the support from their friends and fellow warriors to have their back against the giants. If it takes a village to raise a child, it will take a few more to take down a giant.

Tribes of Midgard will be available July 27, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
