Many video game companies reported record-high sales during the most recent fiscal quarter amid COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. Square Enix saw spikes thanks to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but the company also said sales for Trials of Mana have "significantly surpassed our initial expectations" since the game released April 24.

Announced during E3 2019, Trials of Mana is a HD remake of Seiken Densetsu 3, the originally Japan-only third title in the "Mana" series that garnered worldwide acclaim thanks to 1993's Secret of Mana on the SNES. The success of this remake contributed to a rise in both sales and profits for Square Enix's "HD Game sub-segment," according to the company's August 6 financial results briefing.

Thanks to games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Trials of Mana, net sales rose to ¥87 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2021, from April to June 2020. The developer has high expectations for its HD Game sub-segment going forward thanks to Marvel's Avengers releasing in September, and Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda said digital sales with "powerful add-on content" in that game will "play a more important role than sales of physical copies."

No matter what the future holds for Square Enix, fans of its long-running Mana series should be happy to know that Trials of Mana is successful, as this could open the door for more games down the line. Nintendo even hosted a Smash Bros. crossover with Trials of Mana before the JRPG released, suggesting Square Enix hopes to make it more of a household name.

Trials of Mana is available now for PC, PS4, and Switch.
