It would be a serious understatement to say that Call of Duty has become a major franchise for Activision, with the NPD recently dubbing the Treyarch-developed Black Ops the best selling game of all time. So it should surprise no one to learn that Treyarch is already working on its next installment in the Call of Duty franchise, and recent Treyarch job postings all but confirm this to be true.
Numerous job postings on Treyarch's website show they are staffing up, likely for its next Call of Duty game. For example, one available position is a Gameplay Combat Designer. The description for the job states that the individual hired reports into the Design Director for the Call of Duty multiplayer team at Treyarch.
The listing for the Scripter position reveals that a design test utilizing Call of Duty mod tools may be required depending on previous experience. The conclusions are easy to arrive at, with Treyarch also looking for a Multiplayer Systems Designer, a Single Player Level Builder, and Lead Lighting Artist, among others.
Just because Treyarch is likely working on another Call of Duty game, however, that doesn't mean gamers should expect to see the finished product anytime soon. Treyarch has been on a consistent two-year cycle and it would be a safe bet to assume the same would be true for its next installment. But that still doesn't rule out another Call of Duty game in the near future.
With news of Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, and Raven Software all contributing to an upcoming CoD game or games, it would be safe to assume Activision will have at least one CoD title for gamers in 2011. Whether releasing a new Call of Duty game every single year is a good idea or not is another story.
Treyarch impressed consumers and critics alike with Black Ops, and likely made a good impression on Activision bank accounts and stock holders. It will be interesting to see what they can and will bring to the table with their next game in the popular franchise.
