Treyarch, the developers behind Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War and the upcoming title Call of Duty: Black Ops, for the PS3,  Xbox 360, and PC,  have stated that they are done with World War 2 era games. Treyarch confirmed this in an interview with Spong.

Josh Olin stated in the interview:

"For us, I don't think we would go back because we've done a lot of World War II."

I wonder if this means Treyarch will possibly go the route that Medal of Honor did and possibly tackle current wars, such as the War on Terror in Afghanistan or will they try something completely new like the Korean War or the Gulf War? One can only speculate, and this is definitely some pretty big news coming from a big developer.

There are two different ways you can look at this news. Some people who loved the World War 2 setting may be disappointed because they were looking forward to another installment of the war that followed a part of the war that hasn't yet been tackled in a video game. Then there are the others who prefer the Modern Warfare games. Now that Infinity Ward has basically crumbled and lost a lot of its talent, hopefully Treyarch will step in and continue the record selling franchise.

Personally I believe this is good news for gamers all around. This shows that Treyarch as a developer, are paying attention and realize that maybe the WWII setting is a little over done, and instead of rehashing the same crap over and over they are willing to try something different. And that, is more than I can say for a lot of big developers out there right now, who keep dipping into the sequel jar.

If Treyarch stays in the running as one of the lead developers for the Call of Duty franchise, we may get to see them give their take on a modern combat game. Black Ops will be our first taste of what they can do, as it is only set roughly 40 years ago. Plus we had zombies in World at War and we are getting zombies in Black Ops, so maybe one day we will see Treyarch's zombie levels in a modern setting. One, such as myself, can only hope.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set for release November 9th, 2010 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
