Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies fans are a passionate bunch, so it is hardly a surprise that they have been frustrated with the changes to the Ray Gun Wonder Weapon. Fortunately, Treyarch has heard the complaints, and the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War version of the Ray Gun will soon be returned to its former glory.

The Ray Gun is the clear outlier in the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies weapon rework. Requested by players for some time, the recent update completely overhauled the mode’s lineup of weaponry, increasing critical hit damage for most guns. Specifically, Assault Rifles and SMGs were improved, which was a welcome change given the uselessness of the weapons in high round play. Unfortunately, the update came with a cost, as the fan favorite Ray Gun was knocked down a peg.

The patch saw the Ray Gun’s ammo count decreased drastically, with the overall ammo pool of the gun essentially being cut in half. While Treyarch likely made this decision to adjust the Call of Duty Zombies meta, as players had previously only used the Ray Gun and Hauer in high rounds, fans clearly saw it as a step too far. Thankfully, a Tweet on Treyarch’s official account has confirmed that the nerf will be reverted.

The Ray Gun will be seeing its ammo raised back to 100 shots un-upgraded and 200 shots with an upgrade, restoring its capacity completely. While Treyarch did not provide an ETA for this adjustment, it does share that the changes will happen “soon.” Treyarch also confirms that the Dead Wire ammo mod has been buffed, something that should make it useful again. Previously, it had been the best mod option by far, though a major nerf saw it becoming the worst. With this re-buff, though, it should now be somewhere in the middle of the pack. The broken Black Inknife blueprint has also been fixed.

Given the complex history of the Ray Gun, it is understandable why fans were bothered by the change. The original Wonder Weapon, the Ray Gun was one of the best options in Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops. The following three Treyarch games saw the gun becoming far weaker, replaced by the beloved Ray Gun Mark 2. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has finally seen the iconic gun becoming viable again, and with it now being so hard to obtain, making it weaker feels like a step backwards.

Fortunately, Call of Duty Zombies fans will not need to worry about the Ray Gun nerf much longer. Before long, it should be the best option for slaying the undead once again.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
