Double Fine’s upcoming and anticipated XBLA title, Trenched, now has an official release date. You can now mark June 22nd on your calendar as the date to download the mech/tower defense game for $15 or 1200 MS points. Nothing has been formally announced, but the timeframe would land the game as a potential XBLA Summer of Arcade title.

Trenched is another clever installment to the Double Fine lineup where you take control of a mech to battle your enemies. The game features a blend of third-person shooter and role-playing games, but combat will mainly follow the tower defense style of gaming.

The story behind Trenched follows wheelchair ridden war hero, Frank Woodruff. He and fellow handicapped veteran, Vladamir Farmsworth, were both survivors of a strange attack - a communication that exploded the brains of the majority of the world’s population.

After the attack, both obtained a superior knowledge of advanced technology.

Farmsworth constructed the television, ahead of its time, and went insane in the process. He ended up laying cables across the world and built hybrid television-robots, dubbed as “Tubes”, with the plan of world domination in mind.

To fight against the enemy, Woodruff used his newly-found mechanical prowess to engineer giant powerful mechs, or mobile trenches, to fight the Tubes and allow walking-impaired soliders to battle once again. The Mobile Trench Brigade was assembled and became the main course of attack against Farmsworth’s Tubes.

Double Fine released a gameplay trailer and screens for Trenched earlier this year, now check out the recently released intro cutscene:

Trenched is the successor of Costume Quest and Stacking, as well as a continuation of Double Fine’s new business model of developing and launching creative downloadable titles.

The development house’s next title, Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, broadens their target age range and will make use of the Kinect technology. Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster is expected for a Q4 2011 release.

Trenched is due out June 22nd on XBLA for $15/1200 MS points.
