In what is most likely an attempt to capitalize on the success of the recent Transformers War for Cybertron, a new MMO based in the Transformers universe is set to hit our neighbors to the East some time next year.

Game developer NetDragon is behind the game but has been fairly mum about how they plan to tackle the ongoing battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. If I were to take a guess I would expect something very similar to War for Cybertron with its third person shooter/vehicle combat than a more traditional point and click MMO.

With the third Transformers film set for release in July of next year my biggest fear is that the game will somehow tie in with the movie’s release, to be immediately dumped in the trash. Luckily this game has not even been put on the North American slate as of yet. Those countries who are currently slated to receive the game include those located in Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, and Russia.

Chairman of the Board at NetDragon talked about his excitement saying,

“Transformers is already a household name in China, and we are extremely honored to be able to join hands with Hasbro to bring the excitement and fanaticism of Transformers into the online gaming sector.”

As a North American who loves the Transformers franchise, though some might disagree, I can’t help but take offense hearing that the game has yet to be considered for our shores. Throw in Peter Cullen and Frank Welker and NetDragon is sure to sell a large number of copies.

At the rate we are currently going with MMOs with games based on everything from the DC Universe to LEGOs, it’s hard to imagine where developers will go next. I certainly can’t wait for the Thundercats MMO where I get to spend all my time trying to get it on with Cheetara.

Interested in a Transformers MMO, Ranters? Or do you think NetDragon should keep it away from North American shores?
