New Transformers Fall for Cybertron Details Emerge

Transformers: War for Cybertron (see our review) is viewed by some as one of the best video games based on the Transformers franchise, and High Moon Studios is preparing to up the ante with Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Today we have some new information on this highly anticipated sequel.

One of the special qualities of War for Cybertron was that it was made by a development team that cared deeply for the source material they were working with, and it was this attention to detail that made the game a success. Not only is High Moon bringing this same level of quality to Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, they're also listening to fans of the first game and making sure that most of the problems won't be making their way into the sequel.

Dan Amrich a.k.a. OneofSwords has released several new details on the new game that are sure to be received well by series fans. Along with the addition of more ammunition, both Autobots and Decepticons will be able to use the same weapons. This is made possible due to a new store system where the player can upgrade those weapons, with each character also granted their own special ability. For example, Jazz can execute his devastating grappling hook and Bruticus will send bots running with his ground pound, all at the push of a single button.

To many Transformers fans, the inclusion of the Dinobots – Grimlock especially – is reason enough to pick up Fall of Cybertron. Gamers will be interested to know that Grimlock will operate quite differently than the other Autobots. Instead of utilizing the game's many long range weapons, Grimlock is designed to be more up close and personal with his attacks. The change means he will perform like a sword and shield-wielding warrior more than just another rifle-carrying soldier.

One of the more successfully realized aspects of War of Cybertron was its multiplayer component, but the same portion of Fall of Cybertron remains somewhat shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that the character creation system will be a lot deeper the second time around.

Instead of choosing your class and color scheme, players will be able to customize their vehicle type via their torso selection. From there players will be able to change wheels, arms and other body parts to their liking. These parts, however, will be unique for each class and won't show up on other character types.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is shaping up be one of the must-have titles of 2012. At least that's our stance, since the game is one of our most anticipated games of the year. Unfortunately, though, PC players won't be able to join in on the fun.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron releases August 28, 2012 on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
