Since acquiring the Transformers license, Activision has done great things with the IP, as well as some not-so-great things. Their third-person shooter Cybertron series earned critical acclaim and was basically a love letter to the franchise, but they’ve also put out a number of rushed efforts, including the poorly received Rise of the Dark Spark, as well as numerous widely panned movie adaptations. Furthermore, Transformers Universe, a MOBA style online multiplayer experience, flopped and was shut down on January 31st of this year.
Transformers: Devastation is the next Transformers game from Activision, and sounds like it could fall on either side of the spectrum. It’s a departure from both the Transformers games that earned praise as well as the ones that have earned the disdain of fans, but with Platinum Games behind Transformers: Devastation, it certainly has more potential to succeed than most games based on the franchise.
Previously, Platinum Games said they were going to reveal a new game at E3 2015, but with the leak of Transformers: Devastation, the cat’s out of the bag, and yet another E3 surprise has been spoiled. The initial leak of the game named Platinum Games as the developer behind the title, which turned out to be correct, but also falsely claimed that the game was exclusive to Xbox.
A further leak, courtesy of Best Buy, unveiled the game’s box art as well as some minor gameplay details. The game boasts cel-shaded graphics, and features five playable characters, though more playable characters could possibly be announced later. Currently, the confirmed characters are all Autobots, and are as follows: Bumblebee, Grimlock, Optimus Prime, Sideswipe, and Wheeljack. Fans of the cartoon should be happy to know that these characters will be voiced by their original voice actors, including the iconic Frank Welker (Megatron) and Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime).
The game is said to be a “brawler”, but what that means exactly is not entirely clear just yet. It is possible that the game may be similar to Anarchy Reigns, which was a previous game by Platinum that was also described as a “brawler”, and had a major focus on online multiplayer.
In the meantime, Activision is not hosting their own E3 press conference, and they typically have their games featured in the conferences of either Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. It is interesting that the original leak suggested that the game was Xbox exclusive, and may indicate that it will be shown during Microsoft’s E3 press conference.
After all, both developer Platinum Games and publisher Activision have healthy relationships with Microsoft. Platinum is currently developing the Xbox One exclusive Scalebound, which was revealed at E3 2014. Meanwhile, Activision has almost always given Xbox platforms first dibs on Call of Duty DLC, which is pretty significant considering the consistently massive sales of the franchise, with the latest entry, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the top selling game of 2014.
Transformers: Devastation has no release date yet, and the only platform definitively confirmed is the PS4. However, based on previously leaked information, it is likely that the game will drop on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One when all is said and done. Expect more information on the game next week during E3, including news on a release date as well as officially confirmed platforms.
