While the Transformers movies haven't always been met with critical acclaim, the lead for the upcoming installment thinks things have changed for the franchise. Anthony Ramos recently said that he believes Bumblebee has changed the calculus for the next installment and beyond, for the better.

The earlier Michael Bay Transformers movies have had a wide-ranging cast of male leads. From Shia LaBeouf to Mark Wahlberg, the focus for the most part has been on the action and the giant robots clashing as much as possible. Then Bumblebee came along, and the prequel focused more on one particular Autobot and worked to tell his backstory. Now, Ramos believes that Bumblebee can and will serve as a kind of blueprint for upcoming films in the Transformers universe.

Ramos gave a recent interview about the next Transformers movie to Variety, where he said that fans should expect something different. The In The Heights star recently saw his latest project hit the big screen - and small screen on HBO Max - and said he's now ready to turn his attention to starring in the next film centered on the giant robot aliens. He said that both he and co-star Dominique Fishback are going to offer something quite different from what fans have seen from LaBeouf, Wahlberg, and Bumblebee's Hailee Steinfeld.

Ramos also said that when fans get to see Transformers 7, they'll understand that new director Steven Caple Jr. is "a visionary." Furthermore, Ramos added that he can't wait for people to see the director "flex" and show what he has up his sleeves for the next installment in the long-running series.

For now, just what the next film is going to show is very much under wraps. Other than Autobots fighting Decepticons, Transformers 7 plot details have been kept close to the vest by the studio and cast. There has been one character confirmed for the next movie though, as Autobot leader Optimus Prime will feature prominently in the story.

There are actually two Transformers movies currently in development, with a sequel to Bumblebee and a follow-up to The Last Knight being worked on simultaneously. There have also been rumors that there could eventually be a movie that would bring together the universes of Transformers and the characters from G.I. Joe. That particular crossover featured heavily in several different versions of both IPs' comic books but was never really explored in either animated series. Just when audiences can expect to see any of these projects is still unknown.

The untitled Transformers sequel is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 24, 2022.
