Trailer for Comedy ‘noobz’ Pokes Fun at Competitive Gaming

Notwithstanding The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, there haven’t been a lot of notable films focusing on the video game community. While Kong was a documentary and decidedly old-school, Wunderkind Pictures’ feature film, noobz, examines the field of modern competitive gaming in a comedic light.

This road trip flick shows the journey of four friends attempting to win the “Cyberbowl” video game championship. The movie stars Jason Mewes of Jay and Silent Bob fame, Blake Freeman (Gawd Bless America), Moises Arias (Ender’s Game), and Matt Shively (True Jackson) as the intrepid foursome. Other notable actors making an appearance are Zelda Williams (the daughter of famed comedian Robin Williams), Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers), and Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite) as a Billy Mitchell look-alike.

Based upon the trailer footage, the concept is reminiscent of the comedy, Fanboys, where a group of friends travel cross-country in a quest to see the newest Star Wars movie before its general release. Like that film, noobz is receiving some industry support as Gears of Wars 3 is the featured game of choice, and even G4’s Adam Sessler makes an appearance for “Xploited TV” while covering the fictional tournament. While the press release for noobz notes that the film will contain gamer-centric humor, genre films about video game players can be difficult to pull off without resorting to cheap stereotypes such as the kid who lives in his parents’ basement or the adult gamer who has never kissed a girl. Hopefully, noobz stays away from such easy targets or it could easily turn off video game fans, a notably critical bunch to begin with.

Let us know your thoughts about the trailer and what you’d like to see in a movie about hardcore gamers.

noobz is set for a summer theatrical release. A sneak preview will take place at PAX East 2012.
