Trailer for New FPS 'Nexuiz' Gives Early Look at Gameplay

The First Person Shooter can come in many different forms; it can lean more towards a realistic sensibility like Call of Duty or it can be a purely visceral experience in something like Halo: Reach.Nexuiz, a new downloadable FPS from AlienTrap Software gives a throwback to the colorful yet deadly fast-paced action found in Quake or Unreal Tournament and we have your first look.

In attempting to explain Nexuiz, many gamers are sure to be confused, so allow the developers to inform you:

For centuries the Kavussari and Forsellians have waged a galactic war. Over time the two races entered into treaties with the Herald Accord, a union between different cultures in the galaxy. Even though peace settled across their planets, the seething hatred between the races kept the fire of war simmering under the fragile truce. Sensing their newest members could spread war throughout the galaxy; the nations in the Herald Accord gave the Kavussari and Forsellians a choice. Pit their warriors against each other in the arena rather than on the fields of war, or face total annihilation. The Nexuiz was formed, a series of battle arenas on the home planets of the Kavussari, Forsellian and the ruined planet of Atavirta.

Nexuiz is an arena shooter that is making its way onto next gen consoles in the near future. Starting out as a game created and released as a mod for Quake back in 2001, Nexuiz is making its return after having its source code purchased by Illfonic this year. Now with Crytek’s CryEngine 3 under the hood Nexuiz is sure to gain a serious following if the right moves are made with the tech.

From the looks of the trailer, the aesthetic of the game is reminiscent of the Victorian era with a futuristic twist applied. While combat in Nexuiz might look a bit generic, the game has a few tricks up its sleeve to give gamers a unique experience. As a way to separate itself from other gorgeous FPS of the same ilk, Nexuiz uses a new feature called the dynamic mutator:

Nexuiz will feature a dynamic mutator system that allows players to change the rules of the match as its being played; as players rank, new mutators become available for them to use.

No details have been given as to how the rules of the match will be altered but the ability to compete in matches with constantly changing rules is sure to keep players on their toes. Currently we only have the one trailer to go by but keep posted to Game Rant for news about Nexuiz as it comes in.
