Award-winning free-to-play MMORPG Tower of Fantasy will have its next update on February 2. Developer Hotta Studio has released an outline on the upcoming major update 2.3, titled “Wandering Amidst Miasma,” that details new bosses, challenges, a map, and more. The update will be released as part of a six-month anniversary of Tower of Fantasy.

Previous notable updates for the open-world RPG include an introduction of the Confounding Abyss map and an Artificial Island. Both respective updates gave players an underground section and a new floating island area to explore. Before that, the "Vera Expansion" was released, which introduced fans to the city of Mirroria. The last update before 2.3 was a patch fix. Tower of Fantasy's reception has been overall positive with it being compared to fan favorites like Genshin Impact. The free-to-play game was particularly recognized by the industry when it won The Games Award for Best Mobile Game in 2022.

As for content included in the major update, there’s a lot to take in. Firstly, players can look forward to a wide array of events where they can earn more nuclei, dark crystals, and other rewards. The new Tower of Fantasy map will allow Wanderers to explore the Miasmic Swamp. It will include a diverse landscape of mixed settings, including rock-layered valleys and rainforest vegetation. The swamp will also include new creatures and plant life to encounter. There will also be vibrant Neon Mushroom and mysterious Egg Devices that add special gameplay and puzzle-solving mechanics in the overworld.

The other new content includes two new bosses, Jormungan and Eva. Jormungan unleashes powerful claymore attacks, while Eva’s power comes from spinning assaults boosted by her primary volt stat. A thing to note about these bosses is that they come in two phases. The second phase sees both bosses having an increased range of attack and number of lightning hits. Other content includes the “Carnival Party” addition, which has players battling in a musical style. Wanderers will battle against a band and defend against unique guitar and vocal attacks. “Pursuit of Fate” has players defeat enemies while traveling in Tower of Fantasy via racecar. Lastly, “Origin of War” contains seasonal multiplayer tower climbing where players can mix and match builds.

While Tower of Fantasy has been criticized as not having much that sets it apart from other gacha games, the developer's dedication to keeping it fresh is praise-worthy. Another bonus is that the upcoming update adds something new in various gameplay areas, so there will hopefully be something for every player to enjoy. Also, the fact that Tower of Fantasy will remain free-to-play means that any curious gamers can take advantage of these upcoming content additions. This year might hold more awards for the praised MMORPG as it appears to be starting 2023 on a strong note.

Tower of Fantasy is now available on PC and mobile.
