Total War: Warhammer 3 is the third and final title in Creative Assembly's hit strategy trilogy, and has recently been expanded with the long-awaited Immortal Empires campaign. Players who own all three games in the trilogy can now play every faction on a massive combined map that covers the entire Warhammer Fantasy world. Several of the original factions have received a rework for Total War: Warhammer 3, but none more so than the Warriors of Chaos in their new Champions of Chaos DLC.

Each of the four Champions of Chaos is dedicated to a Chaos God, and the disciple of Tzeentch is Vilitch the Curseling. As a pawn of the Architect of Fate, Vilitch combines the solid frontline of the Warriors of Chaos roster with the unbound magic and trickery of Tzeentch. On the campaign map, the Curseling's armies can teleport through obstacles, confound their foes with magic, and sever long-held alliances.

Vilitch's Changing of the Ways

Total War: Warhammer 3 Vilitch Changing of the Ways

Like the other Champions of Chaos, Vilitch the Curseling inherits some features from his patron god's pure-daemon faction, the Oracles of Tzeentch. The most important of these features is the Changing of the Ways, which allows Vilitch to spend Souls to perform powerful magics on the campaign map. Although he has a limited version of the Changing of the Ways compared to Kairos Fateweaver, Vilitch can still Reveal Faction Intentions, Reveal Shroud, and Break Alliances. In addition, he has three powers that Kairos doesn't get: Muddle Minds, Spawnify, and Drain Magic.

These powers allow Vilitch to prepare for tough fights by weakening enemy armies, and strengthening his own with Chaos Spawn of Tzeentch. If the Changing of the Ways isn't enough, however, then Vilitch also has another Tzeentchian trick up his sleeve. By spending a portion of his Winds of Magic reserve, Vilitch can teleport his entire army to a nearby spot on the campaign map. This can be used to dodge aggression, cross impassable mountains, or even hop across narrow seas, making sure Vilitch is always a step ahead of his enemies.

Dark Fortresses and Harvesting Souls for Tzeentch

Total War: Warhammer 3 Vilitch Gifts of Chaos

With a remote starting position in the far north-east of the Immortal Empires campaign map, Vilitch will want to take time to build up strength in the early game. The best way to do this is to head west and claim the Dark Fortresses along the Great Bastion. Each of these unique settlements allows the Warriors of Chaos to set up a strong base that will become the bedrock of their miltary and economic power. In addition, taking any Dark Fortress in Norscan homelands will cause Vilitch to automatically vassalize that tribe.

Once Vilitch has secured a foothold in the Chaos Wastes, his next target should be to break through the Great Bastion of Grand Cathay. Whether he's slaughtering unruly Norscans or haughty Cathayans, Vilitch will gain Souls to offer to the Chaos Gods. Due to the inscrutable schemes of the Changer of Ways, Vilitch will also be able to harvest Souls from his own battle casualties.

These Souls are used both for powerful passive buffs through the Gifts of Chaos mechanic, and to upgrade Vilitch's Lords and Heroes. Undivided characters that reach a high enough rank will be able to dedicate themselves to Tzeentch, gaining new magical powers and abilities at the cost of half their levels. Players can also spend Souls to transform a high-ranking lord into a Daemon Prince. This will greatly boost their power, but like the above mechanic will cost them half their levels.

Building Armies as Vilitch

Total War: Warhammer 3 Vilitch Warband Upgrades

Like the rest of the Warriors of Chaos Legendary Lords, Vilitch has a few options for recruiting and upgrading his troops. The first is Warband recruitment, which can be performed anywhere on the map, but is limited to what units are available in that province at the time. Each province has a small pool of units to recruit from, based on various factors including climate and Chaos corruption. These units have a chance to renew each turn.

Once Vilitch's Warband units reach a certain rank, he can upgrade them provided he has researched the correct technologies. These upgrades will transform the unit to a higher-tier equivalent. As a pawn of Tzeentch, Vilitch can choose to either keep his Warband troops as generic Chaos Undivided, or grant them the Mark of Tzeentch, which will provide unique blessings from the Changer of Ways. Each Lord in the Puppets of Misrule roster has a different Authority over Tzeentch or Undivided units. They can give bonuses based on factors such as Traits, Skills, and Heroes.

In addition to the Warband recruitment, Vilitch can also gain access to the kinds of Tzeentchian daemons found in the Oracles of Tzeentch roster. Once a Gift of Chaos that gives units is slotted, players will regularly be able to recruit small numbers of that unit into their armies. Finally, if Vilitch is able to forcibly vassalize or even ally with another Warhammer faction, he can build Outposts in their settlements to recruit units unique to that faction.

Vilitch on the Battlefield

Total War: Warhammer 3 Vilitch in battle

As the Champion of Chaos devoted to Tzeentch, Vilitch the Curseling uses a combination of mortal and daemonic units on the battlefield. Rather than the swift armies of Azazel or the lumbering forces of Festus the Leechlord, Vilitch focuses on a blend of might and magic. The daemons of Tzeentch add powerful ranged options to the Puppets of Misrule roster, with Pink or Blue Horrors able to throw bolts of magic from behind the safety of heavily-armored Chaos Warriors.

This focus on magic extends to Vilitch's Lords and Heroes, offering some of the most devastating spells and debuffs through the Lore of Tzeentch. Overall, the melee-heavy roster of the original Warriors of Chaos becomes much more balanced in Vilitch's hands, allowing for hybrid forces capable of dominating both at range and in close-combat.
