Total War: Warhammer 3 is the next in the Total War: Warhammer series, and fans are very excited for it. So excited that, for a while, fans thought they found a release date for Warhammer 3.

Sadly, those hopes were dashed when Total War: Warhammer 3 was, as announced just yesterday, delayed until early 2022. While fans are disappointed, this will hopefully allow for extra time to make sure the game lives up to its potential. To soften the blow, Creative Assembly released a trailer showing off two of the new factions for Total War: Warhammer 3 in battle.

Just like the earlier Total War: Warhammer 3 trailer that shows off Kislev and Khorne, the new trailer shows a mortal nation battling the forces of Chaos. In this case, the forces of Chaos are Tzeentch's, but the main showcase is of Grand Cathay. Mentioned for years in Warhammer lore, this is the first time Grand Cathay appears as a fully realized fighting force. The lands of Grand Cathay are lush and pristine, covering even more territory than the Empire, and its troops are well organized and powerful. This is shown in the trailer which starts in peacetime, then transitions to a battle.

The infantry of Grand Cathay consists of heavily armored, mostly spear or halberd wielding troops. This is to protect its main offensive power: heavy artillery consisting of rifles, cannons, and flying machines also armed with rifles and cannons. Further augmenting the troops are enormous terracotta soldiers that are usually inert statues in Grand Cathay's cities. The roster bears some resemblance to the Dwarves, being slow but very sturdy and boasting many artillery options to take down monsters and troops, though presumably lacking the Dwarf faction's innate magic resistance. All of this siege weaponry will no doubt be important in Total War: Warhammer 3's new game mode and reworked siege battles.

Leading the armies of Grand Cathay as legendary lords are children of the Dragon Emperor, the godlike entity who rules the nation. On top of being very powerful sorcerers, they are also a new type of dragon. There has been no gameplay teaser for this part of Total War: Warhammer 3 yet, but the transformation mechanic definitely bears watching.

The other side of the conflict, the armies of Tzeentch, are not shown in as great detail, but there are some standout units. This includes flying monsters, foremost among them a Lord of Change with a new, two-headed appearance. While the presence of these factions was known since the Total War: Warhammer 3 announcement trailer, seeing them fully realized is satisfying. Hopefully they are even more fun to play than to watch in action.

Total War: Warhammer 3 is scheduled for release in early 2022.
