The original Total War: Warhammer was a huge hit for developer Creative Assembly, and soon after release fans of both the tabletop game and the Total War strategy series were calling for more. Thankfully, the next Warhammer game from the developer is on the way - and is coming sooner than some might have expected. Creative Assembly released an announcement trailer for Total War: Warhammer 2 today, with a first-look cinematic trailer.

From the off, fans of Warhammer can discover that Creative Assembly is looking to add a number of new races from the tabletop game into the fold. The trailer showcases a free-for-all battle between the High Elves, Dark Elves, and the Lizardmen. Meanwhile, those who stick around until the end of the trailer will also get a glimpse at another potential playable race - the Skaven.

Interestingly, Total War: Warhammer 2 is going to be arriving very soon. According to the trailer itself, the game is due to release at some point in 2017, which is a very quick turnaround considering that the first game only released last year and has been seeing plenty of DLC releases as well. Those interested in checking out the full trailer can do so below.

Although details surrounding the game are in short supply at the moment, Creative Assembly has confirmed something very interesting about the game. Apparently, Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Warhammer 2 will be able to slot together into some kind of mega campaign with an eventual update to the second title, complete with any Warhammer DLC the player has downloaded, combining all the content together into a strategy sandbox.

It's certainly something that fans of the game will be looking forward to, particularly given the strong reception that the original game received. Game Rant's own Total War: Warhammer review considered the title to be the best Warhammer game to date, and among the best titles that Creative Assembly had developed. If that same quality can follow through with the sequel, then all the better.

Of course, not everyone has been happy with the announcement, and fans of the historical Total War games had been hoping that a traditional game in the series would be coming up next. Rest assured, however, as Creative Assembly has confirmed that the next historical game is in full development. However, further developments regarding that project will likely wait until Total War: Warhammer 2 is nearer completion.

Total War: Warhammer 2 will be released in 2017.
