A Total War Saga: Troy is finally out. Now players can experience all that the game has to offer, as Total War Troy's gameplay is no longer confined to a trailer.

Many of the mechanics from other Total War games have a firm place in Total War Troy's gameplay. Players control armies that conquer various settlements and cities. The main conflict of the campaign centers around the siege of the city-state of Troy by the Danaans, an alliance of Greek states. These states, along with Troy itself, make up the game's factions. Each faction is led by an epic hero, but they are not the only legendary figures. Mythical beings also take to the battlefields and can be recruited by players.

Not As Mythical In Person

These "mythical beings" are not really monsters. Creatures like the Minotaur and Cyclops are considered humans in the game, if very unusual humans. Considering Total War Troy's dedication to being an excellent period piece, this is not too surprising. How the game justifies the wrath or will of the Gods in that context is anyone's guess, but there's no reason not to roll with it.

Local Legends

Some settlements and cities have local populations of mythical units to recruit. Players will be notified of this upon capturing such a location. After learning about this, players will have the option of constructing certain buildings that allow the mythic creatures to be recruited. The four types of creatures that can be recruited this way are giants, harpies, centaurs, and sirens.

Full Worship

The remaining mythical beings can be recruited by reaching the final tier with one of the gods' cults. Each cult rewards a different being, four of them used in combat, and three as epic agents. Poseidon rewards the Cyclops, Zeus rewards the Minotaur, Hera rewards the Corybantes, and Ares rewards the Spartoi. Aside from these combat units, the epic agents are the Gorgon from Athena, the Satyr from Aphrodite, and the Seer from Apollo. Sadly, Total War: Warhammer 2's Henry Cavill does not make an appearance in the game this time around.

Random Rewards

The last way to get mythical units is by completing certain quests or events. The actual units awarded vary by quest or event, and not all of these will occur every game. They're a nice bonus, but not reliable. Keep in mind that no matter how they are recruited, epic agents only last for 8 turns, and they can't use an ability on the first one. Also, using one of their abilities consumes the agent, and then it's 10 turns before another can be recruited.

The game is already proving popular thanks to going free on EGS, so it's time to see if Total War Troy takes a place among the best Total War games.
