Cheating in video games is as old as the genre itself. Giving oneself an unfair advantage in Total War: Rome Remastered may not be very honorable, but who needs virtue when a horde of barbarians is breaking down the gates? In Rome Remastered, there is a cheat for just about any type of situation.

Activating the cheat command is simple. Press the ~ key to open the console command line, type the code, and press Enter. It's also worth noting that codes in Rome Remastered are case sensitive, so type these cheats exactly as they are shown (excluding the brackets). With these nifty helpers in a player's toolkit, Rome can actually be built in a day.

4 Character Cheats

Brutii Army With Added Units Cheat

There are a vast collection of characters inhabiting the ancient world in Rome Remastered. These individuals serve as family members of a faction, generals, and governors. Agents such as spies, diplomats, assassins, and merchants also serve an important purpose. Every character possesses their own unique skillset and retinue that either makes them highly valuable or incredibly mediocre. Cheats, of course, can turn any character into a veritable superman. Be sure to include the quotation marks wherever they're shown when typing these codes:

  • Instant Troops - create_unit "Character Name" "Unit ID" [Amount]
  • Trait List - list_traits
  • Instant Traits - give_trait "Character Name" "Trait" [Trait Level]

For the first cheat, it's important to note that the Unit ID must be entered, NOT the name of the unit itself! For a quick reference to all the various Unit IDs in the game, check out this helpful list by MightyOwl. Unit IDs can also be found in the game's file folders. An example of the Instant Troops cheat would be entered as follows: create_unit "Amulius Brutus" "roman velite" 1. The player should then see a single stack of velites in that particular army. The Instant Traits cheat would look like this: give_trait "Flavius Julius" "Generous" 1.

3 Settlement Cheats

A Fully Upgraded City In Total War Rome Remastered

Settlements represent the economy of Rome Remastered. Prosperous cities allow for more gold to flow into a player's coffers. By extension, more money means larger and higher-quality armies to unleash upon one's foes. However, building and upgrading one's settlements will take time considering cities need to grow their populations first before they can expand further. But why wait? These building and recruitment cheats can transform small villages into bustling metropolises in no time:

  • Instant Construction - process_cq [Name of Settlement]
  • Instant Unit Recruitment - process_rq [Name of Settlement]
  • Increased Population - add_population [Name of Settlement] [Number of People]

Obviously, these three codes are immensely powerful. On the first turn, a player's cities can spring to life instantly without needing to wait. The player's enemies won't know what hit them as hundreds of years of development are accomplished within a span of seconds.

2 Map & Diplomacy Cheats

Fully Visible Campaign Map From Total War Rome Remastered

Line-of-sight plays a crucial role in Rome Remastered. Knowing the exact location of enemy armies and agents gives the player a massive advantage at the strategic level. Normally, the player would have to hire agents or build watchtowers to keep an eye on the movements of other factions. All that subterfuge becomes unnecessary with these handy codes:

  • Disable Fog of War - toggle_fow
  • Successful Diplomacy Action - force_diplomacy [accept/decline/off]

The first cheat is the least egregious, although it still bestows a rather unsportsmanlike advantage. The fog of war can be eliminated, thus revealing the positions of every army and settlement on the map. The second cheat makes the player's diplomats world-class negotiators. If the cheat is set to "accept," every diplomatic action will succeed, no matter how outrageous the demands are under normal circumstances.

1 Other Unfair Advantages

Elephant Attack On Roman Infantry From Total War Rome Remastered

Cheats are, by their nature, unfair advantages that favor the player. The codes that have already been listed can easily end a campaign in a shockingly brief amount of turns. However, the unstoppable domination of one's opponents doesn't stop there. There's even more one-sided leverage a player can impose both on the battlefield itself and the campaign map. As always, utilizing these codes can stop opponents in their tracks:

  • Win Battle - auto_win [attacker/defender] (Note: The code will take effect during the next auto-resolve)
  • Demolish City Walls - jericho
  • Unlimited Money - add_money [Amount]
  • 10% Unit Discount - bestbuy
  • Spawn Yubtseb Elephants - Oliphaunt

The first cheat is arguably the single-most powerful code in the game and the only one a player may ever need. Conquest is the primary means of gaining more settlements. Never losing a battle guarantees ultimate victory considering military setbacks will never occur. Another code that players of the original Rome: Total War may remember well is the money cheat. Who needs a robust economy when the denarii can literally pour itself into the treasury?

Furthermore, if the player ever gets tired of scaling walls or breaking down gates, the "jericho" code makes sieges ridiculously easy. Enter the code during the midst of a battle and the enemy battlements will start to crumble. The aptly named "bestbuy" code institutes a modest discount to unit recruitment. Lastly, the Oliphaunt cheat spawns a powerful unit of elephants, the tanks of the ancient world. Sit back and watch the carnage unfold as these intimidating pachyderms rampage across the battlefield!
