Torchlight III is the perfect game for players looking for a unique dungeon crawler to hack and slash their ways through. The Railmaster is an absolutely fascinating class unlike anything found in other games. Building magical trains to help aid the player in battle while swinging a massive hammer is a joy to experience. With such oddity, however, comes difficulty. It can be daunting to decide which Relic to choose with a Railmaster or to even understand exactly how one works. With a bit of knowledge, this gets much easier.

Skill Trees: Conductor and Lineage

The Railmaster has two skill trees, Conductor and Lineage. Each skill can be leveled up to make them more effective, with each skill point invested doing things like increasing damage reduction and decreasing cool down. Players can actually choose to entirely ignore Conductor Skills if they want to and still make a strong melee character that can actually get through the game, but they lose out on the wacky ability to literally build trains in the game.

The following are all the Conductor and Lineage skills found in Torchlight III and their in-game descriptions:

Conductor Skills

Torchlight 3 train

Build Train: Built a train and start laying rail for it to follow. Your lead car shoots passively for 25% weapon damage.

  • Train lead car passive damage +8.50% per level
  • Passive damage to all train cars +1.68% per level

Morter Car:

Active: Make the mortar turret fire an incendiary round that deals 100% damage over time for 6 seconds

Passive: adds a mortar turret to the rear car that shoots periodically for 100% weapon damage.

Unlocks By: Spending 1 skill point in Conductor

  • Activated Mortar burn duration +4.25% per level
  • Active Train skill cooldown -2.52% per level

Shield Car:

Active: Heals for 5% of max health per second and grants a shield that gives 50% damage reduction on activation around the car for 8s, which lasts 8 seconds when you leave the area.

Passive: Grants 15% damage reduction.

Unlocks By: Spending 5 skill points in Conductor

  • Passive damage reduction +8.50% per level
  • Damage when near your train +1.68% per level

Shotgonne Car:

Active: Shoot a single, large slug that pierces enemies for 250% weapon damage.

Passive: Periodically fire a large blast of fire that hits an area for 100% weapon damage.

Unlocks By: Spending 10 skill points in Conductor

  • Train Shotgonne car passive damage +7.65% per level
  • Active skill damage to all train cars +1.68% per level

Flamethrower Car:

Active: Make the flamethrower shoot a 3-second burst of flaming missiles that deal 50% weapon damage per hit and leave enemies burning for 2 seconds.

Passive: Adds a flamethrower car to the rear of the train that periodically shoots flaming missiles for 10% weapon damage and leaves enemies burning for 6 seconds.

Unlocks By: Spending 15 skill points in Conductor

  • Flamethrower passive burn duration +12.75% per level
  • Train car skill cooldowns -4.20% per level

Lineage Skills

torchlight 3 Blasting Charge

Pound: Slam your weapon for 150% weapon damage in a small area of effect with a 25% chance to stun your foes.

Stun Duration: 4s.

  • Pound stun chance +5.10% per level
  • Damage reduction in melee combat +1.68% per level

Blasting Charge: Throw out a blasting charge that deals 50% weapon damage and causes enemies hit to take 15% additional damage for 6 seconds.

Unlocks By: Spending 1 skill point in Lineage

  • Damage vulnerability +4.20% per level
  • Lineage skill damage +8.50% per level

Hammer Spin: Spin around with your hammer, dealing 100% weapon damage, knocking back your foes, and gaining a speed boost after. Movement speed is boosted by 50% for 2 seconds.

Unlocks By: Spending 1 skill point in Lineage

  • Hammer Spin Speed Boost Duration +17.00% per level
  • Railhammer damage +8.40% per level

Flying Picks: Throw out two pickaxes dealing 30% weapon damage that leaves enemies bleeding for an additional 80% for 6 seconds.

Unlocks By: Spending 5 skill points in Lineage

  • Flying Picks damage +8.50% per level
  • Endurance recharge rate +4.20% per level

Lantern Flash: Use the power embedded in your ancient lantern to burn enemies for 125% weapon damage and Blind them. The duration of the blinding lasts for 0.5 seconds and the burn duration for six seconds.

Unlocks By: Spending 10 skill points in Lineage

  • Lantern Flash Blind Duration +8.50% per level.
  • Damage vs Stunned, Blinded, or Slowed targets +5.88% per level.

Ghost Train: Call forth the spirit of an ancient train. It moves forward doing 200% weapons damage and knocks back your foes.

Unlocks By: Spending 10 skill points in Lineage

  • Ghost Train damage +6.80% per level
  • Healing for 5 seconds after using a lineage skill +4.20% per level

Spike Drive: Sunder the earth with your weapon, sending out cracks that do 125% weapons damage and leave enemies slowed for 50% for 6 seconds.

Unlocks By: Spending 15 skill points in Lineage

  • Increased Damage to Spike Drive +4.20% per level.
  • Chance to Return an Endurance on Melee Attack +1.50% per level.

The Best Relics For Railmasters

Blood Drinker

It is possible to make a workable build with each Relic in the game, but there is a reason certain Relics are used more than others. There's simply no denying that the Flame Destroyer Relic combined with the Railmaster results in mindblowing amounts of damage.

It is worth noting that there is no one best set of abilities to use for every Relic. Players need to focus on choosing abilities that suit their Relic's passive abilities well. There are even times with the Railmaster where it's better to completely ignore his train building abilities.

Still, there are ways to work with every Relic, so we collected some basic builds for players to start with. These are just the building blocks, Abilities and Relic Skills to focus on with equipment suggestions. Players should tinker with these to create builds that suit their needs.

Blood Drinker – Bloody Smash

Core Skills: Blasting Charge, Hammer Spin, Lantern Flash, Pound, and Spike Drive

Relic Skills: Blood Seeker, Dance of Death, Drain, and Living Barrier

Equipment: Full set of Cosmic armor. Weapons that deal flat damage and can apply Burn.

Why This Build Works: The kind of melee damage the Railmaster can offer with Hammer Spin is enough to combine well to keep players healed thanks to this Relic's abilities. Players will want to add on a bit of Burn damage to help with damage output which synchronizes well with Lantern Flash.

Bane – Miasmic Monorail

Core Skills: Blasting Charge, Build Train, Flamethrower Car, Hammer Spin, Shotgonne Car, and Spike Drive

Relic Skills: Arachnid Assault and Miasma

Equipment: Full set of Cosmic armor. Equipment that gives opponents Poison and/or slows, stuns, or blinds.

Why This Build Works: Ban is a bit tricky to use with the Railmaster, but this build is the best way to do it. Players will need to try and slow down enemies so their Poison Damage has enough time to take effect. With the train cars putting out their own damage, it makes enemies weak by the time they reach the Railmaster.

Cold Heart – Po Han Guang Jian

Core Skills: Blasting Charge, Hammer Spin, Lantern Flash, Pound, and Spike Drive

Relic Skills: Cold Front, Ice Shield, and Snowstorm

Equipment: Full set of Cosmic armor. Weapons that have the chance to slow, stun, or blind.

Why This Build Works: Pull the breaks on that train! This build works best when the enemy is slowed, stunned, or blinded. This allows the Railmaster to get to smashing away at them without needing to worry about having as high of damage output. This build is ideal for patient players.

Electrode – Thor's Hammer

Core Skills: Blasting Charge, Flying Picks, Hammer Spin, Lantern Flash, Pound, and Spike Drive

Relic Skills: Chaotic Strikes, Localized Storm, and Thousand-volt Burst

Equipment: Full set of Cosmic armor. Equipment that adds damage to Relic Skills. Weapons that have a chance to Shock.

Why This Build Works: Players want to make sure electric bolts are flying everywhere so they have the best chance to build up damage. Flying Picks has the ability to increase the chance for more damage this way and works well in this build.

Flaming Destroyer – Fireman's Flames

Core Skills: Build Train, Blasting Charge, Flamethrower Car, Hammer Spin, Shocking Rounds, and Shotgonne Car

Relic Skills: Cloak of Flames, Nimble Flames, and Summoning Smash

Equipment: Full set of Cosmic armor. Weapons that have the chance to slow, stun, blind, or deal Burn damage.

Why This Build Works: Flaming Destroyer and Flamethrower Car? A match made in heaven. The amount of damage this build can manage will make jaws drop. This build also focuses a bit more on the train side of things, which can be fun for Railmasters that want to live up to their names.
