After an unexpectedly long delay, Runic Games’ eagerly awaited Torchlight 2 finally has a concrete release date – and it’s in the very near future. Mark your calendars and get ready to call in sick to work, action-RPG fans: September 20, 2012, is all about playing Torchlight 2.
To celebrate the news (and perhaps to prove they’re serious about the date – more on that shortly), the good people at Runic have put together a launch trailer for the game. Give it a look, and keep in mind: 20 days from now, that’s what you’ll be playing.
Come September 20th, Torchlight 2 will be available as a digital download from a wealth of sources, including Steam, Perfect World, GamersGate, GameFly, GameStop and directly from Runic Games. Players who somehow never got around to the first Torchlight should consider pre-ordering its sequel from Steam, GamersGate or GameFly, as all three retailers are still offering a free copy of the original Torchlight as a bonus for doing so. And don’t forget about Torchlight 2’s wallet-friendly price — it’s only $19.99!
Though it finally has an official release date, there is still work left to do on Torchlight 2. On the game’s website, Runic CEO Max Schaefer promises that his team won’t quit until the game ships.
“We worked incredibly hard to make sure we could release Torchlight II before Summer’s official end. Development will continue right up until we ship, and we couldn’t be happier to be putting the finishing touches on a great game. We want to get it to the fans as quickly as possible. Honestly, we can’t wait.”
Now that development on the PC version of Torchlight 2 is (nearly) complete, Runic will turn its attention toward the Mac version of the game, which will be released at a later date. Despite the excellence of the Xbox 360 port of the original Torchlight (read our review), no console versions of Torchlight 2 are planned – which is a bummer. Then again, Torchlight 2 runs on the same engine that powered the first game, and it ran on practically any PC – smoothly, at that – so chances are that hardware issues won’t stop anyone from playing.
Ranters, which of Torchlight 2’s new classes (Outlander, Embermage, Berserker and Engineer) do you plan to play as? What are you most looking forward to about the game? Let us know in the comments below.
