Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, a number of highly-anticipated media products have had to delay production to allow for employees and consumers to remain home in quarantine. James Bond: No Time to Die, The Walking Dead's season 10 finale, and The Last of Us 2 are merely a handful of the projects currently pushed back due to the outbreak, with a number of these upcoming releases currently without new release dates.

Joining this long list of movies, video games, and TV premieres, it seems Top Gun Maverick, the sequel to the Tom Cruise lead 80s classic Top Gun, has been pushed back by a few months. Confirmed by Cruise over Twitter, it appears the film will move back from its June 24 release date to the much later premiere of December 23.

In his message to fans, Cruise said, "I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone." As Cruise states, many have been waiting a long time to finally see the sequel to the cheesy action classic, however, the long wait to finally see the film will no doubt be for the better, especially as it means Top Gun fans can enjoy it together.

A number of other films share the same fate as the next entry in the Top Gun franchise, with A Quiet Place 2, F9, Black Widow, and the Uncharted movie all being delayed due to the pandemic. While it's disappointing to see so many exciting releases get pushed back so far, there's no denying that the wait will make finally seeing these giant blockbusters even more satisfying for fans.

Top Gun Maverick will be available in theatres on December 23.
