Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick has experienced ground-breaking success at the box office, instantly becoming one of the year's most talked-about films. The film's record-breaking performance has not been absent from the mind of its stars, and Miles Teller revealed that there are conversations about a possible third installment.

Top Gun: Maverick arrived in theaters during the Memorial Day Weekend and quickly made its imprint at the box office. The film has generated an impressive $597.4 million domestically over seven theatrical weekends and sits atop the pack ahead of Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Warner Bros. The Batman. Globally, the film has earned over $1 billion, which marks the first time Tom Cruise has crossed the milestone throughout his illustrious career.

Waiting thirty-six years for the sequel to the cult 1986 classic Top Gun didn't deter audiences from diving back into the Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell adventure, and it looks as if a third act may be approaching. Top Gun: Maverick star Teller shared some insight while speaking with Entertainment Tonight, stating that it would be great to see a third film, but the decision is Cruise's to make. "It's all up to Tom," stated Teller. "I've been having some conversations with him about it. We'll see."

Miles Teller (Top Gun 3)

Teller was a new addition to the Top Gun universe, cast to portray Rooster, the son of Maverick's fallen friend and wingman Goose. The 35-year-old actor and Cruise developed a solid relationship after the arduous filming to bring the iconic story to life, which included the discovery of jet fuel in Teller's blood due to an allergic reaction. The experience, however, is one the young actor cherishes, admitting that he's never experienced something like this in his life.

Top Gun: Maverick generated $15.5 million this past weekend, placing third at the box office behind Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder and Universal's Minions: The Rise of Gru. The Paramount sequel's pace at the domestic box office has failed to slow down over its seven theatrical weekends, showcasing the intense level of fandom surrounding the film. It's unclear whether a third Top Gun film will surface, but it's undeniable that fans would show up to continue the action-packed adventure.

The continuation of Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell's story, however, won't be developing anytime soon, as Cruise's focus centers around the conclusion of the long-running Mission Impossible franchise, which will split into two parts. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One will look to hit theaters in July 2023, with the release of Part Two looking to emerge soon after. It may not take decades for a possible third Top Gun film to appear, but it will take some time for Cruise to center his focus around the iconic story again.
