During this year's E3, Nintendo impressed many (and confused many more) with its new console, the Wii U. The new Nintendo touchscreen controller was demoed with a bunch of faux games that were used to show off the capabilities of the new controller. Sure, many of the tech demos seemed pretty impressive, but they weren't anywhere close to full games. Nintendo and a few third parties stepped up and announced several games that would be coming to the new hardware, but all of the announcements severely lacked in the detail department.

Quite a few titles were announced for the Wii U, but which games stood head-and-shoulders above the others? We're glad you asked, because we've compiled a list of five Wii U-exclusive games that have been announced, and will hopefully make the system worth owning when it launches next year. Without further ado, Game Rant presents the Top 5 Most Anticipated Games on the Wii U.

LEGO City Stories for Wii U

LEGO City Stories is a yet another new LEGO-filled title from the fine folk at Traveler's Tales, but it's a little bit different than the other licensed LEGO games currently available. LEGO City Stories sets itself apart from past games that feature plastic collectibles, and it does so by ditching the generic level schematic and introducing gamers to an open-world city inhabited solely by LEGOians.

Not much has been revealed about the new game, but players will likely be able to customize their character and create all kinds of awesome gadgets to overcome missions and challenges that are scattered all across City Stories. The end result - if all goes according to plan - should be an open world game similar Grand Theft Auto, but with all kinds of awesome building and vehicles to create and subsequently destroy.

Killer Freaks From Outer Space for Wii U

One of the very few titles for the Wii U that received a very interesting trailer at E3, Killer Freaks From Outer Space is a game currently under development by Ubisoft that seems to cater to those who enjoy bloodshed and aliens. Killer Freaks from Outer Space (or KFFOS, if you will) is intriguing, not just because of its violence, but because the game looks like it can be a complete hit or an absolute miss.

The concept seems solid, and the trailer was reminiscent of Left 4 Dead, but for the most part we only know that players will be thrown into a first-person perspective and told to kill aliens. The extremely early screenshots released by Ubisoft look promising, and if the graphical fidelity is combined with online multiplayer then Killer Freaks From Outer Space deserves its spot on our list.

Pikmin 3 on Wii U

Pikmin 3. This is a game that has been the center of much a confusion during every E3 event in the past three years. Nothing has ever been shown on the new title, but year after year Miyamoto keeps assuring everyone that the game is "well under development". This year Miyamoto said the same thing, but he did manage to mention that Pikmin 3 development has now been changed from the Wii to the Wii U.

The game does seem perfect for the Wii U's new controller however, as players can now literal flick their Pikmin army into battle via the controller's fancy new touch screen. The scenery and locales of the game have always been one of the most appealing aspects of the series too, and now that Nintendo is finally releasing an HD console, one can only assume that Pikmin 3 will look stunning in 1080p.

Legend of Zelda HD on Wii U

What began as a tech demo has since been confirmed to be in development, The Legend of Zelda HD is obviously one of the most anticipated games for the Wii U. The tech demo looked absolutely stunning at E3, and while it didn't feature any actual gameplay, it was a great example of what The Legend of Zelda could look like running on the new console.

Reports have stated that fans shouldn't expect the Zelda game currently under development to look exactly like the tech demo, but that could simply mean that the game is going with a different graphical style (i.e. Windwaker). Skyward Sword may be scheduled to hit retailers later this year, but fans can never get enough of Hyrule — and the promise of the game being in 1080p only makes the game that much more appealing.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Come on, what else did you think it could be? The ultimate in character cross-overs, Super Smash Bros., was confirmed for the Wii U and 3DS during this year's E3. The series is easily one of the — if not the — most popular games exclusive to Nintendo platforms. Years after Brawl's release, people are still playing it, and the same can be said for the series' GameCube instalment, Melee.

Super Smash Bros. is a juggernaut in the gaming world, and the chaotic multiplayer features are easily the reason behind its success. Past games have allowed a maximum of four players to fight against each other at a time, but with the new and improved online capabilities of the Wii U that number could easily be upped if Nintendo decided to. The graphics in Brawl were already jaw-dropping for a Wii title, and now that the game is backed by the superior technology of the Wii U only make it look even better.

There are so many things that would be great to see featured in the Wii U's version of Smash Bros., and if you want to see them all then I recommend you check out the 9 things we want from the next Super Smash Bros.. It's just too bad the game is still several years away from release.
