A documentary about the development of Neversoft's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (THPS) games failed to reach its Indiegogo crowdfunding goal of $75,000 in 2017. At the time, its producers said they would still be moving forward on the project, and Tony Hawk himself announced on Instagram Tuesday that the first screening of the finished documentary would be shown at the Mammoth Film Festival on February 29.

Pretending I'm a Superman, which focuses on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise that came to prominence after its first title was published by Activision in 1999, was created by Swedish director Ludvig Gur and former Neversoft producer Ralph D'Amato. In the Indiegogo campaign posted by D'Amato, another former Neversoft producer named Scott Pease and professional skateboarder Rodney Mullen are featured interviewees alongside Hawk.

Though that crowdfunding campaign only hit 23 percent of its goal three years ago, it has continued to update backers about progress on the documentary; most recently letting them know about the upcoming Mammoth Film Festival premiere. In his Instagram announcement, Hawk says the screening will include a discussion panel featuring Mullen and the filmmakers, as well as an afterparty with THPS cover band The Downhill Jam.

The Pro Skater franchise, largely spearheaded by Hawk until he announced he was no longer working with Activision in 2018, is fondly remembered by many for having solid titles with good music, fun easter egg characters, and extensive cheat codes. Rumors circulated in 2019 that Activision would be remaking Pro Skater 1 and 2, but nothing concrete has surfaced since.

Video game film adaptations are a hot commodity at the moment thanks to the resounding success of SEGA and Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic had the biggest opening weekend box office of any video game movie, even surpassing Warner Bros.' Detective Pikachu from 2019.

Documentaries about video games are also making the rounds outside of this THPS film. A film about the SEGA and Nintendo console wars produced by Seth Rogen and based on Blake Harris' book Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle That Defined a Generation will be premiering in March at South by Southwest.

The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater sold over 9 million copies in 1999 according to the Pretending I'm a Superman website. Fans who have been touched by the long-running franchise it spawned can look forward to learning more about its creation and development starting with the documentary's festival premiere.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is available now on various platforms.
