One of the biggest surprises to come from last year's Summer Game Fest was the announcement of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, a return to the classic skateboarding series that inspired an entire genre of extreme sports video games. When it was reported earlier this year that developer Vicarious Visions had been absorbed into Blizzard Entertainment during the development of Diablo 2 Resurrected, many fans assumed that the revival of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater would be short-lived. That may have been the wrong assumption though, as CKY band member Jess Margera may have confirmed a possible remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater first released in 1999 for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, and Sega Dreamcast. The game was a major success, becoming a best-selling for almost all of the consoles it was released on and inspiring a sequel the very next year in the form of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which is often regarded as one of the best games ever made. Developer Vicarious Visions released a remake of the first two Tony Hawk titles in September 2020, which was a critical and sales success.
Speaking on the Behind Closed Doors podcast, CKY band member Jess Margera claimed that his band had been contacted over including one of its songs in an upcoming Tony Hawk game. Furthermore, he claimed that this would not be the remaster of Pro Skater 1 + 2. CKY's song "96 Quite Bitter Beings" from the album "Volume 1" was famously featured in 2001's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, and since the remakes of the first two games featured most of the soundtracks from the original versions, it would not be too much of a reach to assume that Activision is preparing a remake of the third and possibly fourth entry which could release later this year.
The only issue here is that developer Vicarious Visions was recently absorbed into Blizzard during development of the upcoming Diablo 2 remake, meaning that it is unlikely that the same team that produced last year's remake will be returning for this new Tony Hawk game. This is similar to how Activision handled the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro remakes, with Vicarious Visions handling 2017's Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Toys For Bob handling Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Beenox was also the primary developer of 2019's Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, while 2020's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time was handled by Toys For Bob. This could mean that another one of Activision's studios is handling primary development for this next Tony Hawk game.
There is always the possibility that Margera was mistaken however, and that talks for including CKY's music in a new Tony Hawk game were actually regarding another title or a title that will not be revealed this year. Reports have recently indicated that almost all of Activision's studios are supporting Sledgehammer Games with development of 2021's Call of Duty title, so this upcoming Tony Hawk game may have been put on hold for the time being.
