When Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was released in September 2020, many fans of the classic skateboarding franchise lauded it as a return of the glory days. Vicarious Visions' remaster of Neversoft's original games brought the 20-year old games to modern platforms, but did stop short in one regard. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 weren't initially released on next-gen consoles. An update has now been issued for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but it sounds like something's gone wrong.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 dropped yesterday, March 26. For those with the standard edition of the game on either platform, it costs $10 to upgrade. That should make it all the more frustrating to hear that the updated game on both new consoles appears to be having serious technical issues. The Xbox Series X version of the game in particular is said to have issues with freezing and even game crashes.

In a thread on the unofficial Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 subreddit, two specific issues seem to be cropping up for Xbox Series X users. The first is that even loading the game results in a freezing screen. This can then go away but then reoccur multiple times. Others say that the game freezes and crashes right at Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2's main menu. One player says rapidly pressing the "A" button until the issues stop can help, but otherwise many users are unable to play the game at all.

It isn't clear what's happening in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 that's causing the problem. Some are guessing that it's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 trying to communicate with Activision's online servers that's causing the problem. Others think it has to do with loading the game world itself. Regardless, why the issue is occurring on the Xbox Series X and not the Xbox One is the bigger mystery.

The PS5 isn't clear of issues, either, it seems. No posts are claiming that it's having crashing issues like on the Xbox Series X, however. One user says that their PS5's audio broke when they started Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, as an example.

Part of the issue may be that Vicarious Visions is no longer an Activision subsidiary, but has become a subsidiary of Blizzard where it's currently working on Diablo 2: Resurrected. It's possible that a new team is handling the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, or that the work was complicated by Vicarious Visions' transition. Regardless, Activision will hopefully have a fix for the problems soon.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, with a Switch version also in development.
