After months of rumors, leaks, and speculation, Activision has finally announced that the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series is coming back with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, a remastered collection of the first two games in the critically-acclaimed skateboarding series. The game was announced as part of the four month long Summer Game Fest event, complete with a trailer that confirmed its September 4, 2020 release date for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

As expected, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remasters feature the same classic gameplay that fans will remember from the originals, but with hugely upgraded visuals and 4K support. It includes a lineup of legendary skateboarders, plus most of the games' original soundtracks. Players can expect all the classic game modes from the original two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, though there will be some new content in the form of online multiplayer functionality.

Additionally, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 will reportedly feature more in-depth creation tools, allowing players to create their own skaterboarders and skateparks. Overall, it sounds like a very exciting package, and more information should come to light in the months leading up to the game's release.

Adding to the excitement surrounding Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is the fact that the project is being headed by none other than Vicarious Visions. In recent years, Vicarious Visions has established itself as a highly talented studio when it comes to remastering classic PS1-era games, with the studio having launched Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy to critical acclaim, along with the Crash Team Racing remaster. Considering Vicarious Visions' success, it seems like the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games are in very capable hands.

Tony Hawk video game fans will no doubt be excited for the franchise to return to its roots. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 was critically panned at the time of its release, and so it's been over a decade since the last time a high quality Tony Hawk skateboarding game has released. There once was a time when the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games were among some of the most highly-rated video games, and so it will be interesting to see if this leads to a full-fledged comeback for the franchise.

One has to imagine that if Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 does well that Activision will consider remastering other Tony Hawk games, like maybe Tony Hawk's Underground or Pro Skater 3 and 4. Time will tell, but in the meantime, fans can look forward to revisiting the classics come September.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 launches on September 4, 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
