Gamers have been clamoring for a remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater for years and a new rumor is now hinting that fans of the series may get their wish sooner than expected.

On his Twitter account, video game journalist Sabi stated that he’d been informed by a contact at Activision that playable demos of remasters of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 have already been circulating around the Activision offices. Sabi clarified that his informant wasn’t sure whether the versions were simply test demos or if the games will actually be fully remade.

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series of video games first appeared 20 years ago and there have been five unique titles released to date, the most recent in 2015. Pro Skater 1 and 2 have both already been rereleased, not once but twice. Pro Skater 2X was a launch title for the original Xbox in 2001 and was exclusive to that console and NTSC regions. It included every level from the first two games plus five new ones, and sported updated graphics and player models.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD was released on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in 2012, and featured high-definition remodels of selected levels from the first three games in the series. In addition to updated visuals and gameplay, the game introduced new playable characters and online leaderboards for console players. Unfortunately, HD graphics weren’t enough to satisfy players and the game earned generally poor and mediocre reviews. This might explain the ongoing interest for another remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1, which was extremely well received.

In just the past few years, Activision has remastered a number of beloved classics. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy was released in 2017, Spyro Reignited Trilogy came out at the end of 2018, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled appeared earlier this year, all to great success. Activision has stated that the positive reception of these remasters has affirmed that there are many titles in their IP catalog that “fans are going to want to experience again.” Given the popularity of the Tony Hawk franchise, it seems highly probable or at least hopeful that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater will also soon get a fresh look.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was released on Dreamcast, Game Boy Color, N-Gage, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation in 1999.
