When beloved developer Neversoft Studios was regularly cranking out games in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater entries, the team loved to slip out-there cameo characters into the roster, letting fans grind and carve as both established skaters or Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. While the THPS franchise eventually went the way of the buffalo, fans clamored for the series to come back, never giving up hope that Mr. Hawk would one day 900 back onto consoles.

When Activision announced that the series would return with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, the internet lost its collective mind, with fans waxing nostalgic on the series and dreaming of pulling off the perfect combo once more. However, while the announcement was accompanied by plenty of screenshots to whet fan’s appetites, but Activision remained mum on when fans would finally get to see Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 in action.

Thankfully, Activision and developer Robomodo have finally broken their silence, releasing the first gameplay trailer for the hotly anticipated sequel. Showing off kick flips and darkside grinds a-plenty, skaters such as Tony Hawk and Nyjah Huston fly through fan favorite locales such as the School and Warehouse. Whether its Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2’s Officer Dick airing through the box at the Warehouse or a custom skater lighting his board on fire a la Tony Hawk’s Underground, the trailer is sure to bring back plenty of memories.

Hot on the heels of the trailer, Activision has announced that the PS3 and PS4 will receive exclusive content in the form of playable skaters Sackboy, Sweet Tooth, and Ratchet. But for fans dreaming of using Ratchet’s crazy weapons to pull off special moves, Sony states that the characters will only appear as selectable heads in the games Create-A-Skater mode. The heads will not affect the stats of your skater, nor will they unlock special moves; instead, they can simply be equipped as a novelty head for a created skater.

For Xbox fans worried that this announcement will lead to the Xbox One and 360 getting the cold shoulder, worry not. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 developer Robomodo has stated that the Xbox systems will also received exclusive content, but it is not sure what this content will ultimately be.

In addition to the console exclusive content, Activision has announced that the game will receive retailer-exclusive pre-order incentives, with GameStop getting the “Totally Rad 80’s” pack and Amazon featuring the exclusive “Hawk Skull” board.

While anticipation remains high for the game, the earlier announcement that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game would lack online multiplayer lead to many fans crying foul. Now, with what appears to be an early emphasis on console and retailer exclusive content, fans on all platforms may be getting worried.

But worry not, because the trailer shows off a game that looks like it will be a welcome addition to the series, if a bit dated visually. Fans will just have to wait for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5’s September 29th release date to find out if the game is a return to form for the series.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 releases on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on September 29th, while Xbox 360 and PS3 will be released at a later date.
