It has been over nine years since Lara Croft and Tomb Raider were given a reboot following the release of Crystal Dynamic's 2013 action-adventure Tomb Raider title. Acting as a reconstruction for the story of Lara Croft, the "Survivor" trilogy has been well received by fans and critics, with many glad to see the iconic Lara Croft have much more development on her character. However, not every fan is entirely happy with the new direction of the Tomb Raider, with some wanting to see more independence in Lara for future titles.

Speaking at the 2022 BAFTA awards, narrative writer Rhianna Pratchett spoke about the evolution of Lara Croft and how the story of Tomb Raider has changed following the reboot of the franchise. Pratchett discussed that she'd like to see more in terms of Lara's growth, with her character development relying less on her father. For some fans, Lara's discovery of her father's past was a negative point for the story, as it meant the focus was taken from Lara and placed upon the mystery of her father.

Pratchett would love to see Lara move on from this relationship with her father, instead working on becoming the Tomb Raider fans have known for decades. Speaking on where the character could go in future entries, Pratchett said that she "would like to see probably less father issues... [W]hen we wrote the reboot game, she was really on her way to becoming a Tomb Raider." Pratchett then went on to say that she hopes in the future fans see Lara as an independent Tomb Raider, free of her father's past. With an upcoming Tomb Raider title being announced recently, there's hope these changes will come sooner rather than later.

There are a few more elements besides the focus on Lara's father that fans would like to see disappear in future Tomb Raider titles. While the 2013 Tomb Raider game was, to many, a great start for the "Survivor" trilogy, the game's well-received story and characterizations couldn't make up for an overwhelming amount of quick-time events. By the time Shadow of the Tomb Raider rolled around in 2018, many player complaints about the initial game, such as the lack of side characters, had been fixed. Fans still pointed out the fact that Lara didn't feel like a fully realized Tomb Raider, though.

This is not to say that Tomb Raider's "Suvivor" trilogy didn't show off sides of Lara Croft that fans hadn't seen before. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is touted as revealing some of Lara's darker side, and so there is potential for a new game to delve deeper into the character. With next to no news on the upcoming Tomb Raider game, though, fans will have to wait before they see if Lara's father will return again.
