The Tomb Raider franchise has been churning along for nearly two decades, beginning with the release of the original game in 1996. A game franchise doesn’t survive that long without evolving and reinventing itself a time or two along the way, and that’s certainly been the case for Tomb Raider. Most recently, the franchise got a gritty, ground-floor reboot in 2013, an Uncharted-inspired origin story exploring the beginnings of how Lara Croft became the veteran raider of antiquities gamers know and love.
For anyone who hasn’t checked out the revived Tomb Raider franchise, there’s plenty of reason to do so. The reboot earned solid reviews across the board, and it is currently the best-selling installment of the series, having sold over 8.5 million copies since releasing in March 2013. And thanks to this week’s Xbox Live Deals With Gold sale, gamers now have the best reason yet to check out Tomb Raider: it’s dirt cheap.
Microsoft’s Xbox Live Deals With Gold has been unleashing crazy-good deals on Xbox Live Gold members for around two years now, serving up weekly sales alongside a selection of free Xbox 360 and Xbox One games each month. Headlining this week’s Deals With Gold on the Xbox One front is Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which has received a whopping 67% discount, which drops its price down to a paltry $9.90. The Definitive Edition includes the current-gen port of the original game alongside all of the DLC. Game Rant gave the Tomb Raider reboot 4.5 out of 5 stars.
The Tomb Raider sale is definitely the cream of the crop, but it’s not the only bargain in the offering. The Xbox One version of Murdered: Soul Suspect has also been discounted by 60%, and RBI Baseball 15 is on sale for half price. For gamers who haven’t upgraded to the latest consoles yet, Xbox 360 editions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Spec Ops: The Line are both on sale for 75% off, as are three Tomb Raider games: Legend, Underworld, and Anniversary. All of the discounts are available through Monday, July 20th. Full details about the sale can be found on Major Nelson’s blog.
Aside from the price being more than right, now is the perfect time to play — or replay — Tomb Raider. The reboot has a sequel due out this fall: Rise of the Tomb Raider is scheduled to hit Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10, 2015. The release is a timed exclusive; Rise of the Tomb Raider will eventually arrive on Sony’s consoles, but so far that release date has not been confirmed.
Rise of the Tomb Raider will send Lara in search of an ancient, mythical city called Kitezh, which may hold the secrets of immortality. That journey will have Lara packing a heavy coat as her adventure takes her to the bleak landscape of Siberia. Crystal Dynamics has said that the sequel’s gameplay will feel more in line with the franchise’s roots, with plenty of actual tomb raiding and puzzle solving to break up the shooting dudes in the face. There will also be plenty of unfriendly wildlife to be encountered along the way, another Tomb Raider staple. Game Rant got a behind-closed-doors look at Rise of the Tomb Raider at E3 a few weeks ago, and here’s our write-up of that experience.
Rise of the Tomb Raider will release on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10, 2015.
