There is no official announcement regarding multiplayer, so at this point it remains a rumor, but the job listings make it clear they are at least seriously considering it.
The listings are for a senior multiplayer game designer and for a multiplayer producer. The listing also advertises that employees will be working on the new Tomb Raider.
Unfortunately, the listing does not really make it clear or obvious what type of multiplayer might be included. In the description given for the producer it mentions wanting the candidate to have experience in the creation of maps, player versus player, and co-op. So that could mean the game will include co-op and versus type multiplayer, or it could mean nothing. While this would be a first for a proper Tomb Raider game, the recent Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light showed how co-op multiplayer can work in the larger universe.
Tomb Raider has always had a little bit of a Metroid feel to some extent, even if only because of a female lead exploring a world mostly all alone. Will the addition of multiplayer really change what the game will offer? Who knows.
It does not seem like Crystal Dynamics is all that concerned about the Tomb Raider continuity after all though – the game is a reboot. So maybe this is the perfect time to introduce multiplayer to Tomb Raider – if it was ever going to be done. Maybe they agree with EA and think the offline single-player game is dead.
At this point only time will tell. But then again Uncharted 2 managed to add a quality multiplayer mode and still deliver a great single-player game, so perhaps the hard core Tomb Raider fans should not start getting upset just yet.
What are your thoughts? Are you excited about multiplayer in the next Tomb Raider game or would you rather Tomb Raider stay a single-player game? What type of multiplayer do you think would work best in the Tomb Raider universe? Any specific character from Ms. Croft’s origin you might want to see as a playable character in multiplayer?
