It has been almost a year since Crystal Dynamics laid off a large chunk of employees in order to better focus their efforts on the Tomb Raider series. Since then, they have released Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and are hard at work on a reboot of the series simply titled Tomb Raider. In preparation for this reboot, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed their plan to release a Tomb Raider Collection for PS3.

The collection will include Ms. Croft’s three most recent games bearing the Tomb Raider moniker — Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and Tomb Raider: Underworld, along with PlayStation Home avatars and a XMB theme.

Each of these titles have been met with varying degrees of success, but nothing that has reached as high a level of acclaim as the first few Tomb Raider games developed by Core Design.

Tomb Raider: Legend was the first Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider game and a breath of fresh air after some truly awful entries in the franchise. Legend didn’t get everything right, but definitely reworked the formula and was a step in the right direction.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary was a surprising follow-up to Legend which sought to cash in on gamer’s nostalgia for the good ‘ol days of Tomb Raider. Instead of a direct sequel, Anniversary took the new mechanics and style of Legend and applied them to the original Tomb Raider game in what is an effective and charming remake.

Tomb Raider: Underworld was the first Tomb Raider game to be released for the PS3 and picks up directly where Legend left off. Most people saw this as another good step for Crystal Dynamics, but some felt the camera system ruined the experience. In addition, the PS2 and Wii versions of the game received considerably worse reviews than their Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts.

Overall, these are three fun games that are well worth a try, especially for fans of Lara Croft. The Tomb Raider PS3 Collection is easily the most convenient and complete way to experience Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider games.
