After the first movie reboot of Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander came out in 2018, fans have been eager to see where her version of Lara Croft would take her adventure next. The sequel still doesn't have a set release date, but it has replaced High Rise director Ben Wheatley with Emmy-nominated filmmaker Misha Green, who wrote and directed episodes of the HBO Max hit series Lovecraft Country. Now, Vikander has voiced her opinion on Misha Green, saying that she's excited to work with her on the upcoming film's production.

The first two Tomb Raider films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life, were released in the early 2000s and starred Angelina Jolie as the iconic heroine. While the films enjoyed modest (if unremarkable) worldwide box office grosses, they both received negative to mixed critical reception, earning 20% and 24% Rotten Tomatoes scores, respectively. Warner Bros.' Tomb Raider reboot, with its 52% Rotten Tomatoes score and $274 million worldwide box office gross, was remarkably more successful than its predecessors both critically and commercially, though some weren't convinced about the Tomb Raider reboot's quality.

During an interview with Total Film, Vikander noted that she was excited when the studio first expressed interest in a Tomb Raider sequel. After the mention of Green, Vikander became even more enthusiastic after seeing the filmmaker's work on Lovecraft Country. Vikander reportedly enjoyed her conversations with Green and is excited to work with her on the sequel. "It's so much fun on the Zooms I've had with Misha to finally sit with another woman my own age," she said. "I'm hoping that we get on track and get to do something together."

In addition to working on HBO Max's Lovecraft Country, Green worked as a writer on many shows including Sons of Anarchy, Heroes, Spartacus, and Underground. She is also credited as a screenwriter on The Mother, a 2022 female-led action film starring Jennifer Lopez and directed by Niki Caro, the filmmaker of Disney's live-action Mulan. Meanwhile, the Tomb Raider sequel is expected to co-star veteran actress Kristin Scott Thomas. The previous draft of the sequel was penned by Amy Jump, a frequent collaborator on Wheatley's films.

Vikander is not as big of a star as Jolie and even if she was, it's hard to believe that her Tomb Raider films would be propelled forward by sheer star power in a similar manner to the originals. But that hasn't stopped fans from praising Vikander as the best onscreen version of Lara Croft.

So even as the box office and the audience's interest in films outside of major superhero projects are both up in the air, the positive reception to the Tomb Raider reboot (especially in comparison to the old films' reception) certainly can't hurt the chances of this sequel being made.
