Roughly one month away from swinging into theatres, Tom Holland is keeping Spider-Man: No Way Home's hype at an all-time high. Now the young star is sharing stories of his experience meeting some of the new cast members on set, particularly Green Goblin actor Willem Dafoe.
After the release of the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, fans got a brief glimpse of Willem Dafoe's villainous Green Goblin, the same character he portrayed in Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man, which starred in Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger. Not only did it officially confirm all of the speculations that Dafoe would reprise his role, but it also prompted Holland to share a funny story of how the two met on set.
During a fan event in Los Angeles that featured the second trailer premiere, Holland, who has a reputation for spoiling MCU content, was finally relieved to confirm that Dafoe was in fact in the Green Goblin suit. “I can talk about this, right? He’s in the trailer,” Holland joked. The actor went on to discuss the secrecy around the film's set and how Holland himself was unaware of which big names would be returning in the highly anticipated Spider-Man sequel. “It’s actually a funny story when I met Willem for the first time. Obviously, at that time, all of the villains in the film, it was a huge secret that they were in the film. So they would walk around set with these cloaks on. Naturally, these guys were very excited to be coming back and bringing these roles back to life,” shared Holland. “I just sort of bumped into this guy in a cloak. I was like, ‘Watch out, mate.’ He took his cloak off, and I almost got really scared — Oh shit, the Goblin’s here. He was lovely. He was really wonderful."
Holland added, "There's a story that I would love to tell, but I just cannot tell it yet. You will hear it one day. It's very exciting." While both trailers confirmed many but not all theories, Spider-Man: No Way Home has been one of the most secretive yet popular MCU projects to date. Everything from small bits of information to enormous leaks that have teased the epic story seems to surface online, so Holland sharing new stories only builds the hype even more. With a film of this scale and the number of names surrounding it, not to mention Holland claiming that it will mark the end of his Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy, this upcoming MCU entry may just be one of the biggest.
Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up where Spider-Man: Far From Home left off, as the world now finally knows who Spider-Man is. Seeking Doctor Strange's help in restoring his secret identity through the use of magic, Peter Parker must then deal with multiversal consequences.
There is definitely a lot to digest storywise, but after building up the multiverse all throughout this year in other MCU content and bringing back characters such as Alfred Molina's Doc Ock and Dafoe's Green Goblin, the stakes need to be higher than ever in order to create one of the most memorable MCU films to date. Spider-Man: No Way Home also stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Jamie Foxx as Electro, J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to release in theatres on December 17th, 2021.
