Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a treat for everyone, be it old fogeys who remember the classic 1987 cartoon, or the kids on their lawn who grew up with the Nickelodeon series. Still, there’s always room for adjustment, and some adjustments can’t be made officially. Console owners will have to make do with the new rap by Raekwon and Ghostface Killah instead of Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ninja Rap’ from the Turtles’ second live-action film.

That’s where the PC owners get to lord it over everyone else. They’ve been twiddling around with Shredder’s Revenge since Day 1 with mods. Some add that ‘Ninja Rap’ to the game. Others throw in the French version of the intro song. Then there are these TMNT mods, which are just that bit more special.

6 Classic Cartoon Intro

The game already has a rather gnarly new version of the classic theme sung by Faith No More’s Mike Patton (seriously). It’s good and all, but he didn’t sing the original song back in 1987. He was too busy taking over for Chuck Mosley at the time. Still, for a generation of fans, he can’t replace that cartoon jingle.

This is where NexusMods user UPRC comes in. Just put his GameIntro MP4 and OGV files into the Content section, and the game will play the original cartoon intro and tune instead. It’s even been upscaled to 16:9 with boosted audio!

5 Retro Music Pack

Retro Music Pack

The cartoon is only one source of nostalgia Shredder’s Revenge sups from. It also gathers a bunch of references to the Konami video games from the NES platform game to the other side-scrolling beat ‘em ups.

If the ones in the game weren’t enough, UPRC gathered together a full soundtrack of tunes from those classic games to replace the music. Some are remixes from The Manhattan Project NES game by CoatlessCarl. The rest come straight from the platform game and Turtles in Time. Just place the OGG files in the Audio folder and all should be ready to go.

4 NES Rocksteady & Bebop

TMNT Shredder's Mods- NES Rocksteady and Bebop

Intro videos and music are all well and good. But what about something that’s visually noticeable in-game? How about giving Leatherhead a red hat and ‘nice boots’? Or make the monkey enemies throw poop instead of bananas? Or, less gross, turn Rocksteady and Bebop into their old NES versions?

NatsuKen’s mod replaced their palette with one similar to their old 8-bit versions. It gives them a more retro pink and gray look, while their Turtle Tenderizer throws in some electric blue and neon green that really brings the 1980s back. NatsuKen promises more characters and items will receive the same makeover. For now, users just have to move the XNB files to the right folders (Bebop in the Bebop folder, Boss Banners in the Boss Banner folder, etc.) and delete the ZXNB files.

3 Catwoman April

TMNT Shredder's Mods- Catwoman April

It’s not a surprise there are a bunch of April mods. Some recolor her to look like Black Widow or her 2003 version. Some give her back her R.Mika-esque Butt Attack from the previews or boost her ‘attributes’ to put it politely. DustinOliver’s mod goes further and turns her into Catwoman.

No, not the DC character. In ‘The Catwoman from Channel 6’, April accidentally got spliced with a cat during a transporter accident. She got better after some shenanigans involving Shredder, a collar, and a bunch of cat jokes. DustinOliver’s mod brings that feline version of April to life in the game complete with voice clips from April’s original actor Renae Jacobs. It’s a little trickier to install, so best check out the link and read carefully before giving it a go.

2 Action Figure/Comic Colors

TMNT Shredder's Mods- Action Figure Colors

BonusJZ refers to his mod as ‘Comic and Extra Colors for All’, though others contend these resemble the action figures more than the comic look. Nonetheless, they are very well done, looking bold and colorful. They do fit the old merch, with the Turtles each having their own shade of green, which could help tell them apart during more hectic multiplayer games. That is if the different colored headbands weren’t enough.

What about those extra colors? They’re a simpler affair, like April getting a red jumpsuit, and Splinter getting a white gi. However, basketball fans might be pleased with Casey Jones getting some team-based color schemes. Like L.A Lakers yellow & purple, New York Knicks orange and blue, and Brooklyn Nets black and gray. Just extract the files to the applicable folder (Casey Jones to the Casey Jones Folder), rename the original files as per the link, and all is good to go.

1 Mirage Studios Comics Style

TMNT Shredder's Mods- Mirage Turtles

The game’s callbacks to the cartoon are all well and good. But is there something for the REALLY old-school fans? The ones who remember the Turtles being moodier and meaner, and more into scowling than eating pizza. Lippeth’s recolor mod does just that, giving all the Turtles the same red bandana and white eyes. It also gives April her blue jumpsuit and dark brown hair, an all-red robe for Splinter, a gray tank top and blue pants for Casey, and a red and tan ensemble for Shredder.

But if the Turtles are all red, how can the players tell them apart when things get busy? That potential chaos is part of the plan, as Lippeth “thought it would be amusing” to recolor everyone that way. It’s authentic to the original Mirage Comics and soon illustrates why Leo, Donnie, and Mikey got their own shades. Download the entire MirageRecolor folder, move it into the main folder, and double-click the install.bat file to enable it, then double-click the uninstall.bat file if it gets too much.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is currently available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
