Anyone who has seen a James Cameron film knows that the filmmaker is obsessed with science fiction, technology, and futuristic possibilities. He has made two of the top three highest-grossing films, and his film The Terminator went on to become one of the most popular film franchises in history—which is still an ongoing series. The Terminator was the third film James Cameron both wrote and directed, initially released in 1984 as an inventive Tech-Noir. All of James Cameron's films follow the same themes of science, technology, and the future. All except for one.

The film Titanic sticks out of the filmmaker's filmography glaringly. Although there is the idea of man versus technology present within Titanic, the story is mostly about the people on the ship and their lives. So what is James Cameron doing making just one film that is so different from all his other films? Cameron is notorious for taking an incredibly long time in between his films to develop his stories. He plans each of his movies very carefully and has stories brewing in his mind for years before making them.

Because of all the careful planning, one could assume Cameron does this so he can find a way for each of his movies to make sense within the same world, albeit different timelines. That is how this internet fan theory came to be. It started with a Reddit user's post about Jack Dawson being a time traveler similar to the Terminator franchise, and escalated from there. There is a lot of evidence that suggests that Jack is actually a time traveler because of all of the small details he mentions throughout the movie. He mentions things he could not possibly know, mostly because they haven't happened yet.

There are a few things within Titanic that don't make sense as they juxtapose real-life events. An example would be how Rose DeWitt Bukater has brought aboard the ship famous works of art by artists like Monet and Picasso, even though these well-known paintings were not on the real Titanic and are in museum exhibits today. Cameron intentionally added these in knowing it did not make sense with reality, so Jack mentioning things that haven't yet occurred would be in line with something Cameron would do. Nothing is suspicious yet until viewers realize Jack's character is the only one to continuously mention things that will happen in the future.

It's possible that a Terminator was sent back in time to kill Rose so that John Connor would never be born, but the Terminator wanted to do it quietly and secretly so it could succeed. So, it killed Rose's father, causing Rose and her mother Ruth to be in great debt with no way to make money because of the era. This would cause Rose to have to marry Cal so she and her mother could survive. This led to Rose feeling trapped and suicidal, which is why she is seen about to jump to her death at the beginning of Titanic. If Jack had not saved her, it would have impacted the fate of the entire future.

This is where the Jack as a time traveler theories come in. Jack Dawson was sent back in time not only to save Rose from killing herself, but to inspire enough hope in her to continue living no matter her circumstances. He also impregnated her with a child that would become one of Sarah Connor's parents. Jack wanted this so that John Connor could later be born and lead the human army against the machines. Jack wanted Rose to be able to impact Sarah Connor's life, so he needed her to have a reminder of her promise to keep living that she could hold onto. Their child together also made her keep her promise.

The theory suggests Jack was sent back in time long enough to make his way to where he needed to be, make a quick friend (Fabrizio), and somehow get aboard the Titanic. Because he is not from this time, he does not have any currency, so he has to play a poker game to win his ticket. Not only will this game win him some money, but it will get him a ticket to the Titanic without leaving a trace of his existence behind. Lewis mentions how they never found anything on Jack and that there's no record of his existence at all. Rose has a knowing look on her face, perhaps because during their few days together Jack told Rose he was from the future.

The Titanic sank in the early morning on the 15th of April in 1912. Everything about Jack looks too futuristic. He does and says things that were not appropriate for the era he lived in. His hair is a product of the '90s, and he carries luggage that wasn't made until 1939. The first thing Jack mentions that proves he's from the future is a manmade lake in Wisconsin called Lake Wissota. He said he used to go ice fishing there, but the problem is this lake wasn't created until 1917—five years after the Titanic sank. He also makes plans with Rose to ride a roller coaster at the Santa Monica Pier that didn't exist until 1916. And he also predicts Rose's future, something Rose believed especially if Jack told her he was from the future off-screen.

Many viewers comment on how Jack and Rose only knew each other for a few days but claimed to be in love. This is similar to Terminator, where Kyle Reese had a photograph of Sarah in the future that he looked at every day. Reese also knew all about Sarah because of John's stories, which is how he fell in love with her before he went into the past to save her. The same thing could be true of Jack. He could have known all about Rose's past, present, and future since he was in fact from the future. This is how he is able to tell Rose that she is the most amazing and strong woman he's ever met and that she will go on to make lots of babies and die old and peacefully in her sleep.
