Fans of Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall games have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions over the past week. First, early leaks regarding the recently announced and released Apex Legends battle royale game tied it to the Titanfall franchise ambiguously.

Next, official details on Apex Legends revealed that while it is set in the Titanfall universe, it definitely doesn't have Titans and is otherwise unrelated. Then came the news that Titanfall 3 development ended and turned into Apex Legends. It was a rough run. But now there's something to look forward to: a new Titanfall game in development, planned for release in 2019.

In today's Electronic Arts earnings report phone briefing, the company commented on the recent confusion regarding Apex Legends and Titanfall, as well as plans for the franchise in the immediate future. Specifically, EA says that Respawn is working on a new "premium game," as in a game with a price tag rather than free-to-play, that is planned for release in 2019 and offers a "new twist" on the Titanfall universe.

Taken alone, EA's words could come off as ambiguous. After all, Apex Legends is technically a "new twist" on the Titanfall universe and it really isn't what Titanfall fans had in mind. Luckily, Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella offered further information on Twitter.

"We are also working on more Titanfall for later in the year (yes, I said the T word). We love being able to experiment in this crazy universe!"

He goes on to confirm that he's not talking about the VR shooter that's currently known to be in development at Respawn. So while this new game is almost certainly not Titanfall 3, it is a Titanfall game.

Of further interest to Titanfall fans, as well as new fans of Apex Legends, is some further insight into the inner workings of Respawn Entertainment. Some may be worried how Respawn can manage to maintain Apex Legends, work on new Titanfall projects, and also put out a AAA quality action adventure Star Wars game later this year. Worry no longer, because Respawn has confirmed that it now has two full teams within the studio. One of those teams is working on Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and other action adventure games in the future, and the other focuses on shooters.

Respawn definitely has the capability of creating more Titanfall games akin to the first two in the franchise but the question remains whether there is the opportunity to make more Titanfall sequels. The viability of a single-player focused game at EA that isn't Star Wars is questionable in this day and age. Especially when today's earnings call featured EA effectively saying that DICE's focus on a Battlefield 5 single-player campaign instead of battle royale led to disappointing sales. Suffice it to say, until Respawn says specifically that it's working on a single-player Titanfall sequel, it's worth questioning if it'll ever happen.
