Thus far, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has shown off several things that make it different from the main Borderlands games. The Overworld map fits with the Dungeons and Dragons-like approach the game is taking, spells and melee weapons offer new ways to fight, and character customization seems like it will be more in-depth than ever before. With even Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ cover art forging its own path, the spin-off is shaping up to be different in a few major ways.

However, Borderlands fans do not need to be concerned about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands losing what made the series of looter-shooters so popular. Plenty of guns will be present alongside melee weapons, with all manufacturers returning under some new names. The same style of humor will be present, as will the cel-shaded art style. The game will also offer a Borderlands-like Season Pass, with four content drops releasing after launch. While there are no details as to what these DLCs will be like just yet, and this is purely speculation, they might just continue a pattern seen in past Borderlands titles.

The Character Focus Of Past Borderlands Expansions

In the past, Borderlands expansions have almost always focused on one central figure. In the original game, DLC packs like The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and The Secret Armory of General Knoxx released. In the follow-up, Borderlands 2 fans got to experience expansions like Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty and the beloved Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. Borderlands 3 continued the trend with expansions like Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, with even Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel having the Claptastic Voyage DLC.

The naming convention is seen with nearly every DLC release, and while Bounty of Blood from Borderlands 3 is an exception to the rule, its actual content keeps the same character focus - with the villain Butcher Rose getting the spotlight. With this in mind, it seems likely that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will do the same. Characters like Mr. Torgue have already been shown inside Tina’s new campaign, so it would make sense for the explosives-loving weaponmaker to get an expansion that places him front and center.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ new characters, Frette and Valentine, could also get some expansions of their own. These two figures are seen playing Bunkers and Badasses with Tina at the end of the gameplay trailer, so as her friends, they should have a big role in shaping the main story. While Tina will serve as narrator and dungeon master in the new game, perhaps Frette or Valentine will take over that role in the DLC, with Tina playing along as part of their campaigns.

Based on the limited descriptions Gearbox has shared for these new characters, the robotic Frette is apparently obsessed with following rules. This could make for a funny expansion where Tina and Valentine consistently complain about how boring the DLC is, pushing Frette to be more playful. As for Valentine, he is supposedly a headstrong character, so his Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands expansion could end up being more intense and focused on action.

Giving these two new characters their own DLC would not only flesh them out and make them more popular with the Borderlands community, but it would stick with the franchise’s theme of character-focused expansions that try to feature the titular characters as much as popular. While Torgue, Valentine, and Frette DLCs are all possibilities, there is no telling which characters Gearbox will choose to focus on for the game’s post-launch content. Still, given how closely the Borderlands franchise has stuck to its DLC style thus far, and how well it has worked for Gearbox, it makes sense for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands to follow suit.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands launches March 25, 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
