New information about Tiny Tina's Wonderlands has been revealed during the IGN Expo, and it appears that the Borderlands spin-off will be taking place in an interesting part of the series timeline. While the chances are high that most of the events in the game will be part of a story made by Tiny Tina, the conical placement of the game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is unexpected.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a follow-up to Borderlands 2's DLC Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, though the game will stand alone from the rest of the series with its own combat system. However, despite the game being a spin-off, it will apparently hold a canonical place in the series timeline.

It appears that Tiny Tina's Wonderlands will take place not long after the events of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep.  That DLC was set after the events of Borderlands 2, and it dealt with the Tiny Tina coming to terms with the event of the game and the loss of a friend. Tiny Tina's Wonderland placement does mean that the game will take place before the events of Borderlands 3. Thus, making Tiny Tina's Wonderland technically a prequel to Borderlands 3. The developer breakdown of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands revealed additional information about the story and world of this spin-off game.

Though, to be fair, while the game does have a canonical place in the series timeline, it is assumed that a majority of the game's story will be part of an RPG campaign created by the Game Master, Tiny Tina. Therefore it is unlikely that the game will focus much outside of Tiny Tina's imaginary world. In fact, given Tiny Tina's whacky behavior and constant adapting of the narrative in the original DLC adhering to the series canon could be the last thing the developers made as they craft a world created by her.

The announcement of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands has breathed new life into the Borderlands series. After having four main games set in the same universe, Borderlands almost lost the unpredictability that its fans love. However, just fans could be getting tired of the series, along comes Tiny Tina's Wonderlands changing the Borderlands formula in a big way. The original DLC was a big hit with fans but could not change much about the gameplay, and it still played like a Borderlands game. So it was a great idea by developers Gearbox to make the concept into a full-fledged game with its own systems.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands will release in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
