Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer are two of the funniest men in the video game business working today. Not only are they known for creating some truly creative and gut busting pieces of art but they have also had an ongoing friendship for some time now. While the two had been split up for a time they have now finally joined forces once again under the banner of Schafer’s Double Fine Studios.
Starting at LucasArts developing The Secret of Monkey Island, Schafer and Gilbert were able to showcase themselves as unique personalities in the world of video game development. Since their time at LucasArts both have gone on, Schafer to develop games like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend and Gilbert just recently brought us DeathSpank and the sequel Thongs of Virtue, to create games that further prove their abilities as creators and all around funny individuals.
Currently on Double Fine’s slate is the Halloween themed Costume Quest but after said game’s release expect some news about Gilbert’s first project. The two have been very mum about Gilbert’s work in interviews instead directing the conversation into a long diatribe of humorous one-liners. Gilbert was, however, able to give Kotaku a small hint as to what we might see in his next game saying:
"It's an idea that I've been batting around for many, many years. I've been talking to Tim over the last couple of months about it and it sort of percolated back up. It's very different than DeathSpank, it's a bit of a departure from that. It's going in a very interesting direction. Fans of those old adventure games will like it."
If you are unfamiliar with either of these two auteurs of the industry’s work you certainly should acquaint yourself with some of them. While all of their works demonstrate their abilities as creative individuals I would recommend The Secret of Monkey Island, DeathSpank, and Psychonauts for your first exploration and then wait patiently for their next collaboration.
What do you think of Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer reuniting once again? Is it a dream come true or your worst nightmare?
