While My Hero Academia definitely made the superhero genre more popular in the realm of anime, Deku and his friends weren’t the only superheroes to grace the ever-growing anime scene. In fact, it’s Tiger & Bunny that might introduce hero fans to a potential future in My Hero Academia - that of brand-sponsored heroes saving crime on the daily, all while being rated in a competition.

Wild Tiger

Wild Tiger 2

Serving as perhaps the main protagonist of the series, Wild Tiger or Kotetsu Kaburagi is one of the first sponsored superheroes out there. Teased as an “old-timer” by both his partner Barnaby and the rest of the superhero community, Wild Tiger has sprung out of being an aging superhero and made a comeback with the arrival of Barnaby Brooks Jr., with their pairing heralding the Buddy System.

Wild Tiger has an extremely strong sense of justice and an even stronger faith in the people around him. Despite his stubborn nature, Wild Tiger has his instincts to rely on, often earning the irritation of his partner. He has the Hundred Power ability which boosts his physical capabilities a hundredfold for five minutes.

Barnaby Brooks Jr.

Barnaby 2

Serving as the partner and deuteragonist of Wild Tiger, Barnaby Brooks Jr. already had a tumultuous relationship with his partner during the start of the series. Ever-determined to do whatever it took to bring justice for his murdered parents, it’s this perseverance alongside his sense of cool that made Barnaby an early hit with fans. Even in the second series, Barnaby can compete with the rest of his colleagues with ease.

Barnaby is extremely serious which, when coupled with his penchant for strategic prowess, makes him the polar opposite of Kotetsu in both attitude and approach. He also has the Hundred Power ability, which means he and Wild Tiger can plan their approach in combat - be it through activating their powers one at a time, in spurts, or at once. Regardless of their choice, their combined superhuman strength means enemies are in for a hard time

Blue Rose

Blue Rose 2

One of the most popular superheroes out there, Blue Rose has gained the love of fans - especially male ones - through her performance-themed appearances in superhero activities. Unlike the others, who focus on catching criminals, Blue Rose - as a trained singer and performer - is more concerned with using her talents to boost the morale of viewers and earn more sponsors, all while using her cryokinetic abilities.

And while Blue Rose, whose real name is Karina Lyle, isn’t that much of a fighter, it doesn’t mean that she’s a pushover. Despite her attention to her looks and sense of style, her combat performance relies on the usage of Liquid Freezing Guns, allowing her to generate ice that she can then control and manipulate.

Golden Ryan

Golden Ryan 2

Making his first formal appearance in the film Tiger & Bunny: The Rising as Barnaby’s substitute partner in Kotetsu’s absence, Golden Ryan or Ryan Goldsmith is nothing like Kotetsu. Known for his standoffish personality and sense of style, Golden Ryan loves making a show out of everything, making him the perfect partner for performance-heavy Blue Rose in Season 2.

Like his outgoing nature, Golden Ryan also has a rather outward power. Known as the Gravity Prince, Golden Ryan can project a gravity dome in front of him, affecting everyone with it through an extremely strong gravity push. Only the likes of Barnaby and Kotetsu can escape this field, but Golden Ryan is left vulnerable when channeling it.

Origami Cyclone

Origami Cyclone 2

Ivan Karelin immediately sets himself apart compared to other heroes with his rather passive skillset. As the kabuki-themed Origami Cyclone, Ivan focuses more on appearing in the backgrounds of other heroes, much to the amusement of his sponsors. While he is hyperactive and outgoing, Origami Cyclone admits that his rather non-participation in combat stems from his belief that his passive powers aren’t meant for heroics.

It’s thanks to Wild Tiger that Origami Cyclone becomes a more active hero in the show's later episodes, with Origami Cyclone coming up with creative ways to use his powers of disguise. While he can take down opponents with his martial arts and weapons, he specializes in blending into the background and disguising himself as his opponents. Meek to a fault, he’s one of the more “unashamed to be a side character” among the cast of the series.

Rock Bison

Rock Bison 2

Donning an imposing armor, behind the large suit of Rock Bison is the rather approachable and mature Antonio Lopez, who’s known Kotetsu Kaburagi since high school. As such, they’ve become the closest of friends and the closest confidants of one another, often giving each other advice when one is in trouble. Such is their bond that Antonio can easily figure out when Kotetsu is lying and often engages in strength competitions with his best buddy.

As Rock Bison, Antonio becomes a herald of strength as well. People can always depend on him for stopping getaway vehicles and becoming the first line of defense for heroes, often forcing enemies to go for their backup plan. By then though, the other heroes would’ve already been able to prepare for the criminals’ capture.

Sky High

Sky High 2

Ever the polite, happy, and kind-hearted hero, Sky High is a role model not just for kids and adult fans, but also for his fellow heroes. Inside and outside the mask, Keith Goodman takes his job as a hero extremely seriously, and he’s dedicated to the point of doing nightly patrols just to stop crime with his manipulation.

While Keith holds a reputation for holding the “King of Heroes” title the most number of times, he’s never seen this be something to be arrogant about, often earning the admiration of his fellow heroes. Although Sky High serves as a Captain America analog of the series, his sense of pride in his responsibility as a hero makes him somewhat unique.

Fire Emblem

Flame Emblem 2

Nathan Seymour as Fire Emblem isn’t just known for their sick driving skills and ability to conjure flames whenever they wish, but rather this innate hotness stems from their natural flamboyant nature as well. Preferring to use gender-neutral or feminine pronouns to describe themself, Fire Emblem is known to be flirtatious with male heroes and the provider of romantic advice for the heroines - but this doesn’t mean they don’t take their job seriously.

As with the other heroes, Fire Emblem is extremely loyal to their fellow heroes and has a strong sense of justice, willing to put their life on the line to protect civilians just as much as they want to put on a good show. While a part of the sidelined members of the main cast, Fire Emblem is easily recognizable for their willingness to stand on the frontlines whenever possible.

Dragon Kid

Dragon Kid 2

One shouldn’t let Huang Pao-Lin’s small nature fool them, as her alter-ego Dragon Kid boasts some of the most intense fighting abilities across the roster - after all, she can do martial arts and control lightning. Although sometimes insecure about her boyish nature, Dragon Kid loves training and mastering her abilities, making her one of the most dedicated heroes out there.

Inside and outside her hero persona, Dragon Kid is protective of the people she cares about. She’s straightforward yet energetic, and as easygoing as she is stubborn. Considering her age, a lot of people consider Dragon Kid to be immature, but she’s one to go to the front lines if need be.

Magical Cat

Magical Cat 2

Childlike, polite, and innocent, Magical Cat is one of the newest heroes; introduced in Season 2 as the partner of Dragon Kid. And while she’s not one to take the frontlines often due to her abilities, she’s more than willing to try and step up whenever necessary.

Due to her age, Magical Cat is often overwhelmed with the emotional and mental strain of being a hero, especially when she’s put in danger. While this is something she tries to cope with, Magical Cat and her cat-themed costume (as well as her water-themed powers) remain a symbol of hope for others.

He Is Thomas

He Is Thomas 2

One of the newest heroes in the series, Thomas Taurus, or the telekinetic He Is Thomas is immediately introduced as a competent and capable rookie with an attitude, not unlike Barnaby. However, whereas Barnaby had his signature charm, He Is Thomas is somewhat aloof - even to his teammate, Mr. Black.

It’s soon revealed that while He Is Thomas was introduced as being a mysterious millionaire, Thomas Taurus is in fact an orphan and has been able to get himself through studying thanks to doing part-time jobs here and there. It’s his determination to get the job done alone that’s made him quite the independent hero, and he learns to trust others throughout the series.

Mr. Black

Mr Black 2

Yet another one of the next generation of heroes introduced in Season 2, Mr. Black or Subaru Sengoku carries the same vigor and belief in heroism as protagonist Kotetsu, making him a somewhat unique analog to the aging Wild Tiger. However, unlike Kotetsu, Mr. Black is young, making Subaru much blunter and more prone to recklessness.

Regardless, Mr. Black is an unwavering symbol of justice that reignited the spirit of heroism among his peers. As the youngest hero of his hometown, Mr. Black has this sense of hometown pride as well, something audiences can easily relate to when encountering local idols.

Tiger & Bunny 2 was released on April 8, 2022, on Netflix.
