It's Michelle Yeoh's world, we're just living in it. The famed performer will receive the inaugural TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award—aimed to shatter the glass ceiling by "recognizing a woman who is a leader in the film industry and has made a positive impact for women throughout their career"—at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The award will be presented BVLGARI at an in-person gala fundraiser on Sunday, September 11 at Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

"Michelle Yeoh is the definition of groundbreaking," said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. "Her screen work has spanned continents, genres and decades. This year, she delivered a performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once that shows her limitless abilities. We're so proud to honor her with the Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award."

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a comedy-drama packed with heart-wrenching storylines, tax frustrations, and parallel universes (which gives way to epic action sequences). Yeoh carries her role of the Wang family matriarch, Evelyn, through multiple alternate realities, effortlessly shape-shifting into each portrayal. At the time of the movie's release, Game Rant wrote, "Yeoh [...] does such a great job at playing a woman who is clearly in over her head. On top of normal Evelyn, she's also playing all of these other versions of her, one of whom, ironically, happens to be a famous martial arts movie star." Including her lead role in the top-rated movie, Yeoh also starred in Crouching Tiger, Tomorrow Never Dies, Crazy Rich Asians, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Created by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the movie currently has a 95% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes with many critics calling it "overstuffed," but in a good way. Peter Travers from Good Morning American writes, "The Daniels and their wow of a star Michelle Yeoh turn this visionary absurdist comedy into a volcano of creative ideas in full eruption. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen," while Alejandro Turdo from Hoy Sale Cine dubs the movie as "visually stunning" while noting that costars Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan were "at the top of their game."

TIFF will return September 8-18 for its 46th year. The event will open with Sally El Hosaini's The Swimmers and will close with Mary Harron's Dalíland. Between these two movies, roughly 200 feature films will screen, including world premieres, new releases, and some solid throwbacks, like The Mummy and a 30th-anniversary screening of A League of Their Own (both of which are part of TIFF’s Festival Street program). Additional 2022 honorees include Icelandic artist and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir for the TIFF Variety Artisan Award, Hosaini for the TIFF Emerging Talent Award, Brendan Fraser for the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance, filmmaker Sam Mendes for the TIFF Ebert Director Award, and the ensemble of My Policeman for the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.
