Three years after the release of 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players were given a spinoff game that offered more Witcher lore, dubbed Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. The new game diverged from the traditional combat style of the previous Witcher games, and it was widely enjoyed, receiving so many positive reviews that it is now launching on mobile platforms, specifically iOS.
The newly ported Thronebreaker was in the same vein as Gwent, a card game that was introduced in The Witcher 3. Thronebreaker utilizes Gwent's unique style of card-based combat, but is otherwise a brand-new Witcher story, except for the fact that it doesn't focus on Geralt of Rivia. Because of the game's focus on lore, it has familiar jabs at The Witcher and acts as a prequel to the beloved trilogy. The game's main characters include Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia, as she fights against the invading Nilfgaardian Empire.
This new role-playing adventure gives players the freedom of choice, new regions of the world to explore, as well as new monsters to fight. Additionally, this new title helps define the confusion behind the in-game politics, and even explains how Geralt got the title of Witcher that he is most known for. Similar to The Witcher 3's DLC, there are hidden details that expand the story behind the monster hunter's world.
The mobile version of Thronebreaker will cost $10 and take up 4 GB of space on player's devices. For those who play Gwent on a regular basis, the game is also offering 20 new cards for use in multiplayer, as well as a digital map of the game, its soundtrack, and more.
As Witcher fans everywhere that are still awaiting Season 2 of Netflix's adaptation of the story, Thronebreaker offers a unique experience to hold them over.
