Nintendo is one of the most established gaming companies today. Beginning with the sales of playing cards, few could have predicted the hold Nintendo would have over the video game market with series such as Pokemon and Super Mario. With Nintendo Switch console sales still proving the hybrid machine to be extremely popular, Nintendo continues to give fans plenty to look forward to, though it also gives nostalgic players the opportunity to return to some of their favorite NES and SNES titles through Nintendo Switch Online.
Announced back in September 2019, Nintendo revealed that as part of its paid online subscription service, it would allow fans to play some of its classic NES and SNES titles. At first, there were 20 games available for download, though updates are often coming out with new games, leading Nintendo fans to look forward to when the next lot of classic games will drop. After the disappointing announcement that Breath of the Wild 2 is getting delayed, Nintendo fans still might have some good news at the end of March as some new SNES and NES games are being added to the online service.
The first and likely most recognizable game to be revealed in Nintendo's announcement was Earthworm Jim 2, a sequel to the wacky and beloved Earthworm Jim. Following the plot of many classic platformers, Earthworm Jim 2 once again sees a princess stolen from her castle by the game's main antagonist. While this may sound familiar to many experienced gamers, Earthworm Jim is known for standing out due to its unique art style and surrealist humor.
The other two games coming to Nintendo Switch Online's SNES and NES catalogs are Dig Dug 2 and Mappy-Land. The former is another sequel to a popular classic, following the titular Dig Dug as his vacation is interrupted by the "pooka" and "fygar." Dig Dug 2 is an action puzzle game which can see the player strategically destroy parts of a level to defeat their enemies. Mappy-Land focuses on the story of a police mouse who has his presents stolen by an evil cat.
For anyone who likes a bit of action platforming, these three new titles are worth giving a chance. Though, for any Nintendo Switch Online subscriber who hasn't found their new game among these three, there are plenty of other nostalgic and classic titles to be played on the Switch, with Nintendo consistently revealing new benefits for their online subscribers. Both the SNES and NES Earthbound titles were surprisingly announced recently, and there has been a confirmation that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can receive the Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Pack for free.
