It's pretty fair to say that Deep Silver has hit a bit of a rough patch. Over the past few years, the publisher behind the Saints Row and Dead Island series has released a number of titles that have failed to meet expectations. Two of the companies recent triple-A games, the Saints Row-inspired Agents of Mayhem and the Homefront sequel Homefront: The Revolution were meet with average reviews and poor returns, resulting in layoffs at some of its development studios. Now, thankfully, it looks like the publisher's luck might have changed.

Announced today, THQ Nordic, the publisher behind Darksiders, has acquired Koch Media, Deep Silver's parent company, for the cool price of 121 million euro. Included in the deal are all of Deep Silver's titles and developers including Volition, the studio behind Saints Row and Deep Silver's exclusive rights to the Metro games developed by 4A, which has a new game coming this year.

In a press release, THQ Nordic says it has no interest in restructuring Deep Silver and that Koch Media will continue to operate independently under THQ Nordic, though the company did also say it would  "closely monitor and delegate resources" to Koch's games business. So it is possible that THQ Nordic will take a more direct approach than openly expressed.

All this being said there is still plenty for gamers to get excited about. THQ Nordic has expressed the desired to continue with Deep Silver's upcoming release slate. Besides the previously mentioned new Metro title, Metro: Exodus, both Volition and Dambusters are said to have games in active development, and let's not forget about the release of the long-awaited Shenmue 3.

There is also one other title said to still be in development over at Deep Silver: Dead Island 2. Announced back at E3 2016, the sequel to the 2011 open-world zombie game has been lingering in development for some time. Until recently, many thought the title was quietly canceled until Deep Silver reassured gamers it was still in the pipeline. Hopefully with some new corporate oversight, fans will start to get some information on the dormant title.

Regardless of what does end up taking place over the next few months, hopefully, this can be the start of a resurgence for Deep Silver. It can't be easy for a company to have to layoff workers the way some of Deep Silver's developers have had to and no one wants to see the people who put time and effort into our favorite games out of work. Luckily, if Deep Silver and THQ Nordic are going to achieve what they have planned, they are going to need all the help they can get.
